In recent weeks, Netflix released this French film called Oxygen which was quite enjoyable and since it has been a while since the last time a fine scifi film was released I was happy to give it a watch. <br><br>

Something important to know about this film is that the whole story takes place inside some type of capsule and she needs to get out in order to survive. The film reminded me of another one called Buried, where Ryan Reynolds plays a guy who was buried alive and is trying to get out. This is a similar film but there are some important differences in the circumstances as I will explain in a few paragraphs below. 

<h2><center>Main names associated with the film</center></h2>  

The main actress and the one that occupies the screen around 99% of the time is Melanie Laurent. She is the most popular French actress I know and she has acted in several good films such as 6 Underground, Now You See Me, Enemy and Don't Worry, I'm Fine, this last one is also the only French film I have seen with her and the only one where she plays the main role apart from Oxygen of course. <br><br>


Most of the films where she works are little-known French productions, so I only mentioned some of the most popular ones where she has worked which are also usually American films. She is a very talented and experienced actress and new productions are being released each year with her as a member of the cast. <br><br>


The writer was Christie LeBlanc and I was surprised to see this was only her second job as a writer in her whole career. The story was good enough and with a nice twist which made me think it had an experienced writer but nope, she is very new when it comes to creating original stories. Her only previous work was with a comedy series so this was the first time she was doing a scifi-drama film. I hope she continues to explore this skill because she clearly has the potential to create entertaining scifi plots.

En las últimas semanas, Netflix lanzó esta película francesa llamada Oxygen que estuvo bastante buena y como ha pasado un tiempo desde la última vez que se lanzó una buena película de ciencia ficción, me alegré de verla. <br> <br>

Algo importante que se debe saber sobre esta película es que toda la historia transcurre dentro de algún tipo de cápsula y ella necesita salir para sobrevivir. La película me recordó a otra llamada Buried, donde Ryan Reynolds interpreta a un tipo que fue enterrado vivo y está tratando de salir. Esta es una película similar, pero hay algunas diferencias importantes en las circunstancias, como explicaré en algunos párrafos a continuación.

<h2> <center> Nombres principales asociados con la película </center> </h2>

La actriz principal y la que ocupa la pantalla alrededor del 99% del tiempo es Melanie Laurent. Es la actriz francesa más popular que conozco y ha actuado en varias buenas películas como 6 Underground, Now You See Me, Enemy y Don't Worry, I'm Fine, esta última también es la única película francesa que he visto con ella y la única en la que juega el papel principal aparte de Oxygen, por supuesto. <br> <br>


La mayoría de las películas en las que trabaja son producciones francesas poco conocidas, por lo que solo mencioné algunas de las más populares en las que ha trabajado, que también suelen ser películas estadounidenses. Es una actriz muy talentosa y experimentada y cada año se lanzan nuevas producciones con ella como miembro del elenco. <br> <br>


La escritora era Christie LeBlanc y me sorprendió ver que este era solo su segundo trabajo como escritora en toda su carrera. La historia fue lo suficientemente buena y con un bonito giro que me hizo pensar que tenía una escritora experimentada, pero no, ella es muy nueva cuando se trata de crear historias originales. Su único trabajo anterior fue con una serie de comedia, así que esta era la primera vez que hacía una película de ciencia ficción. Espero que continúe explorando esta habilidad porque claramente tiene el potencial de crear tramas de ciencia ficción entretenidas.

The director is Alexandre Aja, who has previously directed a bunch of nice films such as Crawl, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, The Hills Have Eyes, Horns among several other good films. The genres he has explored so far are very varied, he has produced action, thrillers, suspense, horror, fantasy and now scifi with the film Oxygen. Almost all of the films directed by him have been good and Oxygen isn't the exception. <br><br>

So we have a talented and experienced actress, a talented and experienced director, and a newbie writer that has proved her potential, and all of this results in a fine film that's certainly worth watching. 

<h2><center>What was the movie about?</center></h2>  

As mentioned before, most of the events in the film happen inside a futuristic capsule. The woman wakes up because there was a problem and the oxygen available in her capsule has been decreasing rapidly, hence, the name of this film. She doesn't remember where she is or why she is inside this capsule but at least there is a medical AI assistant that can answer her a lot of questions and can manage the capsule in order to take care of her. Except this AI cannot fix the problem with the oxygen.  <br><br>

This AI is capable of doing a lot of stuff and will help the woman by doing the futuristic equivalent of Google searches and also by serving as a phone to contact other people. Despite how useful this AI is, it cannot open the capsule because it needs a security code that the woman doesn't know. She is trapped in a capsule with decreasing oxygen and the AI isn't smart enough to save her life, however, there are good reasons for this.  <br><br>

She begins to attempt to communicate with other people through phone calls to see if somebody can help her, she calls the police but they are very slow and unproductive. Her situation is completely abnormal and there is no proper way for them to help her. Or at least this is how things appear to be at the beginning.  <br><br>

She uses the google-like capabilities of this AI to find information about her and people associated with her but this turns futile, at least in the beginning. Minutes go on, oxygen keeps decreasing and she still doesn't know or understand anything about her situation. Eventually, she gets a call back, things will start to get sorted out and major surprises will start to be revealed.

El director es Alexandre Aja, quien anteriormente ha dirigido un montón de buenas películas como Crawl, The 9th Life of Louis Drax, The Hills Have Eyes, Horns, entre otras buenas películas. Los géneros que ha explorado hasta ahora son muy variados, ha producido acción, thrillers, suspenso, terror, fantasía y ahora ciencia ficción con la película Oxygen. Casi todas las películas dirigidas por él han sido buenas y Oxygen no es la excepción. <br> <br>

Así que tenemos una actriz talentosa y experimentada, un director talentoso y experimentado, y una escritora novata que ha demostrado su potencial, y todo esto da como resultado una buena película que sin duda vale la pena ver.

<h2> <center> ¿De qué trataba la película? </center> </h2>

Como se mencionó anteriormente, la mayoría de los eventos de la película ocurren dentro de una cápsula futurista. La mujer se despierta porque hubo un problema y el oxígeno disponible en su cápsula ha ido disminuyendo rápidamente, de ahí el nombre de esta película. No recuerda dónde está o por qué está dentro de esta cápsula, pero al menos hay un asistente médico de IA que puede responderle muchas preguntas y puede manejar la cápsula para cuidarla. Excepto que esta IA no puede solucionar el problema del oxígeno. <br> <br>

Esta IA es capaz de hacer muchas cosas y ayudará a la mujer haciendo el equivalente futurista de las búsquedas de Google y también sirviendo como un teléfono para contactar con otras personas. A pesar de lo útil que es esta IA, no puede abrir la cápsula porque necesita un código de seguridad que la mujer no conoce. Está atrapada en una cápsula con oxígeno decreciente y la IA no es lo suficientemente inteligente como para salvarle la vida, sin embargo, hay buenas razones para ello. <br> <br>

Ella comienza a intentar comunicarse con otras personas a través de llamadas telefónicas para ver si alguien puede ayudarla, llama a la policía pero son muy lentos e improductivos. Su situación es completamente anormal y no hay una forma adecuada de ayudarla. O al menos así parecen ser las cosas al principio. <br> <br>

Ella usa las capacidades similares a las de Google de esta IA para encontrar información sobre ella y las personas asociadas con ella, pero esto se vuelve inútil, al menos al principio. Pasan los minutos, el oxígeno sigue bajando y ella todavía no sabe ni comprende nada sobre su situación. Finalmente, recibe una llamada, las cosas comenzarán a resolverse y se comenzarán a revelar grandes sorpresas.

There are some parts of the story that weren't very entirely convincing though, and the way an important problem gets solved should have been easy to figure out way before it actually gets solved. Nevertheless, the film is still worth watching in my opinion. 

<h2><center>How was the performance from the actress, the settings and the camera work?</center></h2>   

Melanie does a good job portraying the troubled emotional state of her character for the most part, however, some of her reactions, especially when she was very frustrated weren't entirely convincing, at least in my opinion. I mean, the way she behaved seemed natural given the circumstances but there were some small moments when I think her acting wasn't up to standards. Nevertheless, since she is on the screen for 99% of the film I would say her performance was good and it probably isn't easy to film so much time while being inside a small capsule. <br><br>

The settings are very simple, there is only the capsule for 99% of the film but this capsule was very nicely constructed. It was futuristic and it seemed very realistic. I am not a doctor but this capsule looked like if it could be real.  <br><br>

When it comes to the camera work, I enjoyed what the director did. It isn't simple to find good shooting angles if everything takes place inside a capsule but the camera work was dynamic enough to keep the viewer interested and engaged with the film. Plus, there was a very cool scene when a major revealing is done that was masterfully done. 

<h2><center>Final thoughts</center></h2> 

Oxygen was a good film that despite having some flaws in the way the story is constructed is worth watching. The twists won't be very surprising to many viewers because the film implies what's happening before it is finally revealed. If you enjoy the scifi genre and enjoyed the film I mentioned at the beginning called Buried, you will probably have a good time watching this film.

Sin embargo, hay algunas partes de la historia que no fueron del todo convincentes, y la forma en que se resuelve un problema importante debería haber sido fácil de entender antes de que realmente lo terminan por resolver. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, aún así vale la pena ver la película.

<h2> <center> ¿Cómo fue la actuación de la actriz, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara? </center> </h2>

Melanie hace un buen trabajo al retratar el estado emocional problemático de su personaje en su mayor parte, sin embargo, algunas de sus reacciones, especialmente cuando estaba muy frustrada, no fueron del todo convincentes, al menos en mi opinión. Quiero decir, la forma en que se comportó parecía natural dadas las circunstancias, pero hubo algunos pequeños momentos en los que creo que su actuación no estuvo a la altura. Sin embargo, dado que está en la pantalla durante el 99% de la película, diría que su actuación fue buena y probablemente no sea fácil filmar tanto tiempo estando dentro de una pequeña cápsula. <br> <br>

La ambientación es muy simple, solo está la cápsula para el 99% de la película, pero esta cápsula estaba muy bien construida. Era futurista y parecía muy realista. No soy médico, pero esta cápsula parecía que podría ser real. <br> <br>

En lo que respecta al trabajo de cámara, disfruté lo que hizo el director. No es sencillo encontrar buenos ángulos de filmación si todo tiene lugar dentro de una cápsula, pero el trabajo de la cámara fue lo suficientemente dinámico como para mantener al espectador interesado y comprometido con la película. Además, hubo una escena genial cuando se hizo una gran revelación que se hizo de manera magistral.

<h2> <center> Reflexiones finales </center> </h2>

Oxygen fue una buena película que, a pesar de tener algunos defectos en la forma en que se construye la historia, vale la pena verla. Los giros no serán muy sorprendentes para muchos espectadores porque la película implica lo que está sucediendo antes de que finalmente se revele. Si te gusta el género de ciencia ficción y disfrutaste de la película que mencioné al principio llamada Buried, probablemente te lo pasarás bien viendo esta película.
