Some time ago I read good things about this series called Evil, and since I am a big fan of the horror genre I got to give this one a watch. After watching the entire first season my conclusion is that this is a worth watching series, but it is far from being a real horror show.

The main character in the series is a psychologist who ends up being hired by a team of people who work along the Catholic Church to investigate potential diabolical possessions. The idea is that since she is a psychologist, she could provide plausible explanations without entering into the realm of the supernatural.

She will work along with a priest in training and a quick-wit person who is hard to trick and has different valuable skills. In each episode, these 3 characters are going to face a new mystery assigned by the Church and their job will be to find a solution or explanation.

It is similar to the X Files because each episode we will find a new bizarre situation but there is a bigger underlying plot that is always evolving as the season continues to advances. The fact that we will always find a new weird situation helps in keeping this series entertaining.

I think this isn't a mindblowing horror series because there is not much horror going on. There are some scenes that are creepy enough but it is a very light horror that will leave fans of the genre feeling underwhelming. When comparing this series with true horror shows like Marianne or The Haunting of Hill House (both of them from Netflix) it becomes hard to see Evil as a real horror series, despite its name.

Even though "Evil" explores different types of explanations for each mystery, the series will leave it very clear that there is something macabre going on. In this sense, the name "Evil" is used properly. Especially in the final episodes where we will see a cool personification of Evil itself, rather than the different manifestations we have been seeing in the entire season.

If you enjoy horror, this series is very light in its creepy scenes. However, it keeps itself entertaining despite its shortcomings and flaws. If you are a fan of the X Files, this series has a different tone but it somehow resembles the X Files style of facing a new mystery on each episode, with the X Files the underlying topic was extraterrestrials and with Evil it is the devil and possessions. If you are curious and enjoy mystery shows, then this one is a great choice.

#### The best
* The series explores different potential explanations for each of the mysteries they encounter from the perspective of a religions man, a psychologist and a skillful technical guy who is hard to trick.
* Great and different mysteries in each episode.

#### The worst
* There are some common sense inconsistencies or lack of common sense in the main character and her family such as: if you have important student loans to pay then why would you have 4 children? If you have 4 children how come the father decides to go to some hiking expedition that lasts months and months? Leaving her wife to take care of 4 children plus having to work full time? It doesn't make sense.
* Some acting, small gestures, and short phrases didn't seem authentic at times.
* The 4 kids are always making noise and talking at the same time on purpose. This gets tiresome after a while.

Well, the father went on Everest to get money, is not it? Kids are ok with grandma and mother. And many financially uneducated people do not consider the affordability of kids and on top of that, the government might be running some support programmes, so it doesn't have to necessarily be a big burden. It might have been an accident too. I don't mind the kids were considered basically one person at a time, but you are right that it is not natural for kids to always talk like that.

I did dislike one thing to a greater degree. A psychologist knows to control her emotions. Holding a knife to another person's throat is unthinkable unless he directly and immediately poses a threat to the family. It is still fewer complaints than I would have with Boys for example. Try The Crossing or Locke & Key next, I think you will enjoy the titles.

Yes, but he could have gotten a local job instead, 4 kids are still too much to have an absent father for months.

I will check the series you are recommending. I knew about Locke & Key when it was released but decided to pass it on, is it really worth watching it? The Crossing looks interesting, is it comparable to The Leftovers?

I don't know what Leftovers is about, but The Crossing is actually about the people who claim to be from future made as realistically as possible. I can't complain about any anti-intuitive behaviour of any characters or such, which is what I love about the show.

Locke and Key - I don't know if you are the target group. I can't recall if you watched something similar. Let's say it is set in a normal world, where one family is unaware of its own secret when the father dies. They move to their ancestral home and slowly find out there are magical keys giving them certain abilities. One of them is truly dangerous... In quick, it is about a children/juveniles with access to certain skills and a quest to protect it that they don't believe at first at all except the youngest one. You might probably recall some similar stories. Then, there is a comedy part of their school time.

I want to avoid spoilers, so perhaps check a few reviews, a book description or an episode or two. It is only starting in the first season.
