El combinado vinotinto con la, visión de clasificar para unas olimpiadas, el obstáculo el combinado de Canadá, ganando los vinotintos clasificaban a las olimpiadas, que no lo hacían desde el año 1992, en Portland, hacía ya 23 años; Venezuela estaba soñando con una nueva calificación.

Un juego electrizante de principio a fin una selección Canadiense, que contaba en su plantilla con nueve jugadores de la mejor liga de baloncesto del mundo la NBA, contra una plantilla modesta de Venezuela, la Mayoría perteneciente a la liga local, sin mucha proyección a las ligas de primer nivel del mundo, como lo son la las Ligas europeas, Canadá favorita para ganar el torneo preolímpico, un escenario, lleno de espectadores, el palacio de los deportes, de ciudad de México,
**Entraron en el último cuarto** cuando faltaban 3 minutos el equipo Canadiense, tiene una ventaja de 6 puntos, se le acaba el tiempo a Venezuela, pero entra la presión y el jugador Heissler Guillent, metió dos triples consecutivos y Canadá falló su ofensiva, se empató el encuentro, lanza Heissler Guillent y falla, tomó rebote ofensivo el vinotinto Gregory Vargas y le hacen falta encesta el tiro libre de la victoria 78- 79, logra calificarse a unas olimpiadas después 23 años, es maravilloso ver al Che García corriendo por toda cancha en celebración. Por el triunfo pero esto no ha terminado le toca jugar contra argentina la final.
