Hi everyone! as you know I do animations using vector art, I draw them using Adobe Illustrator software. Some of this pieces are special, because they are inspired by some stuff I have seen in art history, museums and books, so I wanted to do a post about it, because it could be interesting to see where I took inspiration, what images I hold inside me, and how art history trends can be used to create new things.
So this is the first part of the post: animations inspired by art.

# VAN GOGH - SELF PORTRAIT - AUTO RETRATO DE VAN GOGH
This one was hard to do, because I work using vectors with the mouse, so the strokes were something that required some patience to draw, but the result after animated was something interesting. I tried to use the same palette as in the original art I was inspiring on, this mix of pale blue with green, and a contrast with the orange.
Impressionism is really hard to try using design tools, because it was a style that used to paint without defined shapes. Instead of that they tried to appeal to feelings of the viewers with undefined faded shapes built with strokes and pastel colors.
> Este fue difícil de hacer, porque trabajo usando vectores con el mouse, por lo que los trazos fueron algo que requirió algo de paciencia para dibujar, pero el resultado después de la animación fue algo interesante. Traté de usar la misma paleta que en el arte original en el que me estaba inspirando, esta mezcla de azul pálido con verde y un contraste con el naranja.
El impresionismo es realmente difícil de probar usando herramientas de diseño, porque era un estilo que solía pintar sin formas definidas. En lugar de eso, intentaban apelar a los sentimientos de los espectadores con formas descoloridas indefinidas construidas con trazos y colores pastel.

# CHURCH VITRAUX STAINED GLASS - VITRALES DE IGLESIAS

I really had fun doing this one. Stained-glass art is something that really matches well with vectors, because it has this defined figures that stand over this geometric pieces and decorations. These black bold lines also is something that worked really well into vectors, and reminds me in some way of comics frames too.
The original method was something very laborious to do, it is literally colored glass in tiny pieces glued with melted metal. It is considered one of the finest art and crafts pieces of medieval art, and they used to be used as windows on churches. I've made this time a portrait of Joan of Arc.
> Realmente me divertí haciendo este. El arte de la vidriera es algo que realmente combina bien con los vectores, porque tiene estas figuras definidas que se destacan sobre estas piezas geométricas y decoraciones. Estas líneas negras también son algo que funcionó muy bien en los vectores, y me recuerda de alguna manera a las viñetas de cómics.
El método original era algo muy laborioso, literalmente es vidrio coloreado en pequeños pedazos pegados con metal fundido. Se considera una de las mejores piezas de arte y artesanía del arte medieval, y solían usarse como ventanas en las iglesias. Esta vez hice un retrato de Juana de Arco.

# GREEK AMPHORAE ART / ÁNFORAS GRIEGAS

This style matches so well with vector art! I even think that a lot of minimalist art made by designers today had in some way some influence by this.
In classic Greece, the artisans used to paint daily scenes or mythology tales using this black figures over orange backgrounds, or white over black. They used to create these amphorae, vases and plates with terracotta for decoration, drinking wine or holding oil.
Very stylized focused on the narrative. The grandfather of comics books maybe? Anyway, I love this style, I love Greek mythology, so I had to try something using this to do animations. I've made a lot of pieces inspired by these:

# GUSTAV KLIMT - THE KISS / EL BESO
Klimt is an extraordinary symbolist painter that I love. No one knows how to catch the intimacy of human expression like he did, the subtle expression on their faces, the way he drew the hands, is sublime. He used to paint these human figures like no one else, and decorated his paintings with this elaborated textures, he also liked to paint using gold in his paintings, with gave their art a nice touch of luxury too.
> Klimt es un pintor simbolista extraordinario que me encanta. Nadie sabe captar la intimidad de la expresión humana como lo hizo él, la expresión sutil en sus rostros, la forma en que dibujaba las manos, es sublime. # EDVARD MUNCH - THE SCREAM / EL GRITO
Do you remember the serial killer from Scream movies? yes, it was inspired by this painting too.
Munch is one of the best known expressionist artist. They used to paint with this energic strokes their inner feelings in their most brutal way. Do you remember how impressionism tried to create these subtle feelings using pastel colors and strokes, well, expressionism is his punk rock brother!

# RENÉ MAGRITTE - THE SON OF MAN / EL HIJO DEL HOMBRE
This is one of the icons of surrealism. I feel related to Magritte because he used to work as an ads illustrator too, so he took that language from advertisment to create extraordinary pieces of art. This self portrait depicts this strange man with his face hidden by an apple. Maybe is the apple of the sins what is covering his face? I leave the interpretation to you.
I like to paint female portraits, so I gender swapped this one. This is the result of the animation:

# A TRIP TO THE MOON / VIAJE A LA LUNA
I love this scene of this movie beacause a lot of reasons. The first one, I'm a big fan of hard science fiction, that branch of fiction focused on technology and how it helps humans to be better, travel to space, a branch based on real human science, exploring the future possibilities.
Thos movie directed by Georges Méliès can be considered the grandfather of FX on cinema. He used a lot of camera tricks, scenography and marionettes to recreate this trip tale. Had you watched the music videoclip "tonight tonight" from Smashing pumkins? if you like this style, you should do it.
This movie was also based on the Jules Verne book "From the Earth to the Moon", so if the movie is the grandfather of FX and science fiction movies, the book is the grandfather of hard science fiction books.
He told us a tale about how a crew of people lands in the moon after being shot from a giant cannon, and travelled inside a giant bullet. All of this was written a lot of years before we ever imagine about rockets!
And the third and fourth reasons: I have this scene tattooed on my arm, and I painted a homenage about Méliès on a live event using paint sprays, so yes, I really like this scene.

La primera, soy un gran fanático de la ciencia ficción dura, esa rama de la ficción enfocada en la tecnología y cómo ayuda a los humanos a ser mejores, viajar al espacio, una rama basada en la ciencia humana real, explorando las posibilidades futuras.
Esta película dirigida por Georges Méliès puede considerarse el abuelo de FX en el cine. Usó muchos trucos de cámara, escenografía y marionetas para recrear esta historia de viaje. ¿Habías visto el videoclip "Tonight tonight" de Smashing pumkins? si te gusta este estilo, deberías hacerlo.
Esta película también se basó en el libro de Julio Verne "De la Tierra a la Luna", por lo que si la película es el abuelo de FX y películas de ciencia ficción, el libro es el abuelo de los libros de ciencia ficción dura.
Nos contó una historia sobre cómo un grupo de personas aterriza en la luna después de recibir un disparo de un cañón gigante y viajan dentro de una bala gigante. ¡Todo esto fue escrito muchos años antes de que imagináramos acerca de los cohetes!
Y la tercera y cuarta razones: tengo esta escena tatuada en mi brazo, y pinté un homenaje sobre Méliès en un evento en vivo usando aerosoles de pintura, así que sí, realmente me gusta esta escena.
