If You're Going to Borrow Something, Please Bring it BACK!
<html>
<p>The title of this post may seem like a terribly obvious statement, but evidently it's not equally "<em>obvious</em>" to all people.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-left">
<p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/d308b989cf.jpg" alt="CherryBlossoms" /><br />
<em>Spring cherry blossoms, Washington state</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>As we get into spring and "gardening season" is about to ramp up around here... I got to thinking about the age-old practice of <em>"borrowing stuff from your neighbor."</em></p>
<p>Call me crazy or old-fashioned, but when I <em>lend</em> something to someone-- <em>whether it's a book or my lawn mower</em>-- I have this ridiculous expectation that the borrower is going to <em>return</em> said item to me when they have finished using it. And frankly, it really annoys me when I actually have to go chase down aforesaid borrower, next time I need to <em>use</em> whatever-it-was that I lent them.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I'm sorry, but "<em>borrowing</em>" is not some secret code for "<em>passive-aggressively leveraging other people's property!</em>"</p>
<p>Maybe we all have "<em>those people</em>" in our lives.&nbsp;</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-right">
<p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/d3092d1d53.jpg" alt="Lilacs" /><br />
<em>Lilacs in bloom, Washington state</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>You know, the ones who are eternally borrowing stuff-- typically because they can't <em>find</em> their own, or they never bothered with "<em>owning it,</em>" in the first place<em> ("I can just borrow one from someone, if I need to")</em>-- and they never bring it back in a timely fashion, no matter <em>how</em> many "promises" you extract from them.&nbsp;</p>
<p>What's worse, they tend to borrow a clean and ready-to-use tool or piece of equipment... and then when it <em>does</em> come back, it's all dirty and banged up... or maybe even <em>broken</em>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Or maybe I should say <em>"IF"</em> it comes back. There have been certain people in my (past) life who never returned things, on their own accord. Sometimes it almost felt like they would <em>"borrow"</em> something, and unless the person who lent it to them came and <em>"reclaimed"</em> it, the borrower would gradually <em>"assume ownership."</em></p>
<p>And then there's the "attitude."&nbsp;</p>
<p>Back when I was living in Texas, this one friend of mine would always need to borrow this or that garden tool... and then when I'd head over to his house<em> (fortunately he lived nearby)</em> to get it back, he'd feel all distressed and "<em>put upon</em>" and say things like <em>"Dude, you're just sooo uptight and uncool about stuff! I didn't think you NEEDED it!"</em>&nbsp;</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-left">
<p><img src="https://i.imgsafe.org/d308edfce3.jpg" alt="Hydrangea" /><br />
<em>Flowering hydrangea in our garden</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>Seriously?&nbsp;</p>
<p>That is <em>my</em> garden hoe, and <em>you</em> borrowed it, and <em>you</em> didn't bring it back, and now I need to use it, and that's a <em>PROBLEM</em> for you???? On top of which, you're telling me you didn't think I <em>"needed"</em> it, simply because I wasn't actively using it when you came to borrow it?</p>
<p>Needless to say, I wisened up to <em>"J's"</em> shenanigans pretty quickly and found it easier to deal with his moaning and groaning about not lending him something, than having to go get it back later.</p>
<p>Maybe I'm crazy-- or just getting <em>old</em>-- but borrowing something and not returning it promptly <em>(and in the state in which you received it)</em> reeks of a lack of respect, to me.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Not only respect for other people's property, but respect for common courtesy.</p>
<p>But then again, maybe there is nothing <em>"common"</em> about courtesy...</p>
<p><em><strong>What do YOU think?</strong></em> Do you return things promptly when you borrow them? Do your friends return things promptly to <em>YOU?</em> Does it annoy you if you have to repeatedly <em>ask</em> someone to return something they've borrowed from you? Or is that just <em>"what's to be expected"</em> of people? Leave a comment and share your experience-- start the conversation!</p>

"passive-aggressively leveraging other people's property!" - LOL:)
I always return stuff and I always expect my stuff to be returned. And not only returned, but in proper condition. If to talk about something I really like and use a lot (as for an artist in this list get my art supplies and my artbooks) - I don't borrow them to anyone. Sometimes I even don't let touch them at all. Cause:
-What's the matter? Can't I take this pen to write something down?
-No, you can't. Because it's not a pen, it's a fucking rapidograph and if you'll push on it too much I'll have to buy a new one.
Angry artist, huh:)

One of the advantages to a library database: We *KNOW* who doesn't return stuff, and fines are applied automatically as needed.

Indeed. I'm not even that attached to "ownership" as much as just common courtesy. And I actually have no issue with "community" property... but if it IS such, that needs to be clear, as well. Like the library... if it's common property for all to *borrow,* then people need to bring it back for the benefit of the community, as well.

I got a farmer buddy that loaned a neighbor a backhoe. Returned with $7500 of damage. Thankfully my buddy had insurance that covered $5000. Went to get the difference from the borrower and *crickets*.
I don't borrow and I don't loan. Good piece.

Sad as it is, a lot of folks have little respect for property when it's not their own. Just think of the way people trash rental cars and hotel rooms... and the general state of repair of a rental house vs. an owner-occupied house.

Don't borrow, don't loan... good policy.

It shows a complete lack of respect when people "borrow" things and "forget" to return them. As much as I want and try to be a good and generous person, I have to stick with the adage: Never lend something that you cannot afford to lose.

Yeah... it's just sad that we have reached a point where we need to regard "something borrowed" as basically a donation.
