Meanwhile, in Another Part of the Galaxy... A Deadly Virus

It can be hard, at times, to keep my eyes on all the *bouncing balls.*

There was a Presidential Primary... or, rather, it was the famed *"Super Tuesday."* Scratching my head a bit at the notion that the electorate *really* would have a preference for *"Creepy Uncle"* Joe Biden. I guess it just goes to show how terrified the establishment is of Bernie Sanders and his particular brand of *"socialism"* — which isn't *"Socialism,"* at all... I grew up with socialism in Denmark — and will go to almost any lengths to see *that* not happening.

Nothing like a healthy dose of fear to get people riled up against things they actually are pretty ignorant about... I still remember having to seriously scratch my head when I arrived in Texas in 1981 to attend university... and people *seriously* asked me if I was a *communist* because I came from Denmark.

## *Meanwhile, there's a Deadly Virus...*

Our daughter (27) lives in Seattle and she's staying home these days, because she's feeling a bit sniffly. The building across the street from where she works — downtown — was closed a couple of days ago.

Everybody talks about the Coronavirus from a place of fear, and... well, I can't blame anyone for being *worried,* but let's keep things in perspective.

I've been so out of the loop I didn't even realize that until yesterday, *all* the US Coronavirus fatalities have been here in the state of Washington... moreover, in *Seattle* where we have family.

*Springtime!*

Yesterday, a couple of kids at a nearby high school were diagnosed positive and put into isolation. It's *very* close to home, now.

Meanwhile, the shelves at the supermarket where I went today were empty in certain very specific spots that remind me of nothing so much as the end of 1999 and the *"Y2K Scare."*

Of course, this particular illness doesn't look like it is likely to just fizzle out and go away by itself. Of course, things aren't made any better by the media using whatever bits and pieces they can to fill everyone with **FEAR.**

An acquaintance of ours who's an MIT chemist and epidemiologist suggests it'll all play out in both a mild and serious way, at the same time. The whole *"everyone will get sick!"* scenario is overblown, but it's likely that COVID-19 cases will keep rolling around the world in waves for 12-18 months. Yes, there will be many deaths, but they will be spread out over a long time... not *"all of a sudden."*

Life on this planet makes me feel very tired, sometimes.

## *Meanwhile, Making a Living...*

Yeah, gotta to that, too.

Mrs. Denmarkguy reminded me earlier today that I had used the **@steembay** utility in the past to sell some of my painted stones. I might give that a try again... I'd probably just use any Steem earned to power up some more. Somehow, I still believe this community will come out of the current turbulence pretty well.

I suppose nobody ever said that it would be *easy* to work our way through life...

Meanwhile, we have taken serious steps to sell a bunch of all family artwork and antiques that really has nothing to do with our current lives, and has been lugged around with my family for several generations, all in the name of *"tradition."*

Our kids don't care... better sell it *now,* while we still know what we've got, than wait for the kids to put it in a garage sale for $5...

And that's about it, for now. Yeah, still feeling really *tired.*

As long as people use at least a *minimal* amount of common sense, the effects can be considerably contained. This is NOT the time to go sit in a crowded movie theater, or a densely packed bar. But it IS a good time to work in your garden, or continue your jogging regime. If you need to go shopping at busy supermarkets, go during *"off hours."*

Hi Peter, yes my cousins back in Denmark say they are mostly testing on how much work can be done from home; several of them are civil servants and do work that really doesn't *require* them to be in the building.

I love antiques, I try to buy old stuff (Good Will, Salvation Army or Thrift Stores) rather than new, because newer stuff is so often cheaply made and constructed.
That being said, I too have a few things I've been 'carting around' but not that many really. One in particular (according to the story I was told) is the trunk my grandfather had (the ONLY thing he had) when he got off the train in a small town in S Ga US, to later marry my grandmother (31 yrs younger than he) and father 10 children.
I've been using it as a coffee table and storage for years

I'm told that despite its poor condition, it is more valuable than most 
"Steemer Trunks", because of its small size.
I'm the youngest of 10, never married and have no children, and this summer I will turn 65.
Why am I carting this thing around? Family history I suppose.

No worries **@jerrytsuseer,** as far as I am concerned, genuine engagement is never *"bombing"* a post!

Funny cartoon! I'm unashamedly something that doesn't exist here in the US: a Social Democrat Capitalist who neither gets offended nor "unfriends" anyone with different political leanings. It would take a lot to explain... but think of it as having a belief in *"Football with rules and referees"* rather than *"Football with NO rules and NO referees."*

That *is* a very cool old trunk! I've had a few old steamer trunks over the years... I like the way they seem to have "stories to tell." 

The things we're getting rid of don't really have that much place in our space, meaning we would never have chosen them for ourselves had they not been handed down. We reached the *"empty nest"* stage some years back, and are eyeing a future in a smaller space. The "history" aspect is certainly nice, but we also have physically smaller things that tell those stories, along with a couple of large boxes of old *paper* photo albums.

Besides, we'll hopefully get enough out of selling these things to pay off our debts and maybe even put a down payment on a small RV or camper... yes, we're becoming a cliché!

This trunk has been somewhat of an embarrassment for me.
As I think I said, I am the youngest of 10. My mama gave birth to 6, my daddy brought his 4 from a previous marriage, making the ten.
Mama was # 4 of 10. the two eldest were sons that worked on the family farm (this was EARLY 20th century, Daddy was born in 1914, mama in '16) mama's sister Lucille was #3 and was always helping grandma because she was always pregnant, so it fell to mama to do the cooking etc.
So when I was small, one of the boys (my uncles, her brothers) gave her Granddaddy's trunk.
It was locked. I'm not sure but I think mama told me later that she had the key somewhere, but when I found it in our wash room, it was locked.
I was small, nothing was sacred, I plundered into everything in the house, so a locked trunk was irresistable.
I broke the lock (thereby reducing the value of it immensely)
It still had the tray in the top, that would have held sock and underwear etc. It seemed to have been made out of cardboard.
I busted that all to hell too. Another tick down in value.

I've carried this thing from our home in S Ga US to Arizona where I served in the Air Force, back to Ga, and now it is here with me in Atlanta, well Smyrna just outside Atlanta.
I have an antique mahogany dresser (3 drawers, I think it originally may have had a marble top with a mirror)

This was in about 2016, there you have the trunk on top of the dresser
I am divided; I now can afford to have a place, and have nice _stuff_, but I have no wife nor children, so I want to do some traveling before I get too old to enjoy and/or remember, so the more _**STUFF**_ I obtain, the harder it will be for me to let go and travel. Years of drugs and alcohol have taken their toll on me and burned most of my bridges, now that I'm clean and sober, it is almost too late for that to be any good to me.

@denmarkguy that was what we felt here in SG when the coronavirus first hit our shores. After a while, the intense fears go down and people go back to live (a pretty much) normal life.

I think a lot of people *react* to all the stories in the mainstream media news and aren't using common sense *or* taking a balanced approach. The Coronavirus isn't going to come drifting in through the keyhole to your apartment to *"get"* you... sure, it's quite dangerous to certain *categories* of people, but something like 80% of the population won't get infected, even if *exposed* to it fairly briefly. 

We're also trying to accept this as the *risk* it is, but not live in a place of fear.
