<html> <p><em>"You have to think outside the box!"</em> has been a pretty common buzz phrase for a number of years now.</p> <p>Of course, the implication is that we should consider looking for non-conventional solutions to the problems and challenges we encounter.</p> <p>On paper, that looks like a pretty good idea... but is there a better way to create truly game-changing new ideas and concepts?</p> <h2><em>So... About This BOX?</em></h2> <p> <div class="pull-right"> <p><img src="http://i.imgur.com/j2RIlIJ.jpg" alt="DesertFlowers" /><br /> <em>Desert flowers</em></p> </div> </p> <p>As the years have rolled by, it seems to me that we continue to be obsessed with "<em>the box,</em>" and we still keep defining everything in terms of "<em>the box.</em>"</p> <p>On some level, it almost feels like "<em>outside the box</em>" has become a box of its own!</p> <p>Somehow, I don't think that was the original intention...</p> <p>Seems to me that maybe the time has come for us to move forward, but not through more "<em>outside the box thinking,</em>" but by totally <em>THROWING AWAY</em> the box.</p> <h2><em>The Problem with Boxes</em></h2> <p>Maybe it sounds a bit radical to just throw everything out.... but the problem with "<em>the box</em>" is that it typically represents very old paradigms, merely redefined... maybe we <em>do</em> look at a new angle of approach, but it's still wrapped around an old framework.</p> <p> <div class="pull-left"> <p><img src="http://i.imgur.com/DGoyroJ.jpg" alt="WoodsyPath" /><br /> <em>A quiet new road</em></p> </div> </p> <p>It's a bit like the Microsoft Windows operating system... we might have been using various "versions" of Windows but until Windows NT, what people were using was actually little more than so many layers of "<em>refreshed window dressing</em>" (no pun intended) on top of the same DOS that was created for personal computers in the early 1980s.</p> <p>Similarly, in life, we tend to just keep recreating "<em>variations</em>" of what already exists, in order to attempt to make progress. In doing so, we are more likely to put "<em>fences and limitations</em>" in our thinking.</p> <h2><em>Learning from History without Getting Stuck</em></h2> <p> <div class="pull-right"> <p><img src="http://i.imgur.com/MZh9hie.jpg" alt="SmokySunset" /><br /> <em>Sunset on a smoky evening after forest fires</em></p> </div> </p> <p>Don't get me wrong... I'm definitely <em>not</em> proposing that we shouldn't look at what we have already learned in order to have a better understanding of where to go next... just proposing a more open approach.</p> <p>Instead of simply tweaking and retweaking what already exists... sometimes it is better to sit down and say <em>"Here's what we KNOW, from experience. How do we take that and use this to simply inform completely creating a new 'ideal system' from the ground up?"</em></p> <p>Throwing out the box doesn't suggest that we somehow "<em>un-remember</em>" how to do things... just that we look at problem solving with fresh eyes-- almost like being a 5-year old who hasn't yet been told about "<em>what we can't do</em>" and "<em>what works.</em>"</p> <p>We can always come back later and eliminate the <em>truly</em> impossible parts of the new concept. </p> <p><em><strong>What do YOU think?</strong></em> Has "<em>thinking outside the box</em>" become an overused idea? What do you think about the idea of "<em>throwing out the box?</em>" Have you ever been part of brainstorming something from the ground up, rather than as a way to reinvent what already is? Leave a comment-- share your experiences and feedback-- be part of the conversation!</p> <p><em>(As usual, all text and images by the author, unless otherwise credited. I can give you one example and maybe a theme for the next your post. Russian language doesn't have any similar proverb or slogan. Since no one never told me about Look outside the box, we don't have idea about any boxes or fences or limitations. You might catch a theme how different languages in proverbs or slogans imply _differently_ on their owners

I often do view the box thing as a “box inside of a box instead of a box instead of a box” where people just like getting out of the smaller box and into a much bigger one! I’ve also heard a lot of people talk about just tossing the box out. Either involvement with this device seems to just lead further down to similar thinking. I use to brainstorm a lot, I even sent company emails regarding some of my thoughts. Best one ever was a response back clearly written by some legal department threating to sue me if I ever mentioned what I emailed them. No doubt 18 months later what I discussed was now something they sold. Now granted, with how much red tape giant company have and how long they take to even bringing things to market I more than expect they were already working on it long before my email and hence why they acted the way they did. Now if you ask me what it was well I’m not saying lol. I don’t brainstorm much anymore as I often go on the negative side of it “great 100 company have already done that and failed GL trying that, or “what a nice idea now how do you raise the 100 billion to get that off the ground” and so on. It's still fun once in a while but I often leave my own thoughts to myself. The biggest issue even your most “original” idea has more than likely already been one. It's like asking your cell phone a question you though no one on earth would ask and yet it's got a funny reply back meaning 100’s of people already ask it for there to be that funny reply back. It's hard being original and creating something “new,” a lot of the “new” things come from the old. No joke people will read books from the 1900’s written in another langue and go “omg that solves everything.” I’ve noticed it happening from time to time in things like math and science related issues. Someone already created and made a solution we just forgot about it. The other issue you run into is patent trolls. They just love to claim everything and will go after anyone to make a fast buck. Lots of great and wonderful things are controlled by people who will never spend a cent making it. They will, however, spend millions to get millions and millions back from their “right” of ownership.

@enjar, thanks for the extensive reply! Interesting you mention "patent trolls" which is something I'f pretty much forgotten about, but remember back from my days in IT... several of the people I worked with were all set to get patents for various aspects of original computer interface design... and ended up with zero because some goon in an expensive suit "took ownership." Always hated that sort of stuff. Sometimes I just get tired of the cliché nature of the whole "thinking outside the box" concept... as you say, there are layers of boxes. Why don't we just learn to THINK, without trying to parse everything in relation to some previously canned response.

I really dislike that overused expression "think outside the box". I get the meaning that companies like to put on it but most of the time it's just as you say, adding some new cosmetics over something old. Like recovering a tired old sofa with new fabric - but the springs within a still tired and weak. We are so conditioned by the "box" and limits that have been placed on us from the time we were born - how to think, act, be, live - that most people are not really capable of thinking or living outside the "box" or the social norms. A few are able and we call them "geniuses" but they may never have finished formal schooling - they were just able to really think outside the proverbial box and do things differently. The question we should be asking is not really how to think outside the box but how to shed the box and how to live authentically as our unique selves without fitting into a societal mold. This is what I am working on in my life; breaking away from the conditioning, the fears and the confines that I've allowed myself to be herded into like all the other sheeple. I now teach people how to examine their belief systems and how those tired old ideas hold them back. I love to see people who are opening up their own personal "box" and breaking free. Thank you for the thought provoking post. Following!

Thank you @lindasymonds... and well done for striving to live a life without boxes! You're exactly right... we get conditioned to look at everything in the context of "the box" pretty much from birth... and that can be rather confining. I think a lot of people simply forget how to think for themselves... and they get far to bogged down in what some imaginary "they" might think, if they deviate from the established norms.

As a bonsai artist when we come together all options are on the table and each artist brings their vision of the "finished" tree to the table to be discussed, each artist interpretation is considered so there are none that are ignored, if as a group we can't reach a clear cut end product it may be tabled for later but the vision each had stays in our minds and have merit. With trees (living art) we know there will be growth and die back so we never think in terms of any box because we don't have cookie cutter trees, each is different. Thank You for a great topic! Shared.
