Thoughts in Favor of Building Lasting Value
<html>
<p>When I look at life around me, everything seems to move faster and faster every month; every year.</p>
<p>Along with that, we seem to become more and more of a temporary and "<em>throwaway</em>" world. I look around me, and see how things like twitter increasingly replace blogging; Instagram replaces writing an article. Or a journal.</p>
<p>"<em>I just don't have time for that!</em>" and "<em>TL;DR</em>" become common parts of our daily landscape.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The "<em>quick answer</em>" and <em>shortcuts</em> take priority over perseverance and building lasting value.</p>
<h2><em>Steemit, Life... and Lasting Value</em></h2>
<p>
<div class="pull-right">
<p><img src="https://i.imgur.com/dgqe0j7.jpg" alt="Thistle" /><br />
<em>Purple thistle</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>I was reading a number of posts yesterday and this morning, and came across the inevitable number of observations on how to build your presence here "<em>fast</em>" and what services to use to "<em>get rewards NOW.</em>"</p>
<p>I paused and considered our own kids-- now young adults between 26 and 32-- and their experiences in the work place. None of them have experienced any kind of stability-- they have spent their adult lives pretty much "<em>job hopping</em>," seldom being in one place for more than a year at a time.</p>
<p>They come home and spend the weekend with us... and talk about how they feel little or none of the "<em>stability</em>" they were surrounded by, as kids. And how they wish they had some.</p>
<p>Then I look back at Steemit again<em> (still keeping in mind other aspects of life, as well)</em> and realize how many of today's trends are also driven by an impatience and an associated subtext of... <em>cheating(?)</em>... or at least "<em>using gimmicks</em>" in place of simply putting in the time and effort it takes to build something simple and <em>solid</em>.</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-left">
<p><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Rd2qvB6.jpg" alt="Apple" /><br />
<em>Fall apple</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>When I look at the proliferation of <em>"upvote services"</em> and <em>"resteem services"</em> what I see is a bunch of "<em>stuff</em>" designed mostly to let people <em>buy</em> results, rather than <em>earn</em> them through time and effort.</p>
<h2><em>Lasting Value... Temporary Means?</em></h2>
<p>Maybe I'm just getting OLD-- or "<em>old fashioned</em>"-- but I just don't see how you can expect to build something permanent and of <em>lasting</em> value through the use of a bunch of "<em>quick gimmicks</em>" and "<em>schemes.</em>"</p>
<p>The part of my "<em>being old</em>" that perhaps could be characterized as "<em>wisdom and experience</em>" looks at that and says "<em>It has been tried a thousand times before, and it didn't work THEN... and it's unlikely to work NOW.</em>"</p>
<p>Of course, our memories tend to be very short, and almost everyone in the world tends to enter the arena with the tired old idea "<em>Yeah, but THIS time it will be different!</em>"</p>
<p>There's also a particular definition of <em>insanity</em> that goes something like: "<em>The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.</em>"</p>
<p>
<div class="pull-right">
<p><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Fd4Yvgy.jpg" alt="PurpleClover" /><br />
<em>Purple Clover</em></p>
</div>
</p>
<p>Which gets us back to the whole notion of "<em>building lasting value.</em>"</p>
<p>You can't use gimmicks to create something for the long term. It just doesn't work.</p>
<p>What would happen if the artificial inflation of posts went away... assuming for a moment that someone posts to buy upvotes and upvote themselves, what would happen to that person's "value" if those things were taken away, and no longer available?</p>
<p>Odds are it would be like a house of cards and come down... because there's nothing substantive holding it up.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you'd spent the same amount of effort creating something of lasting value... you'd still "have something" if the tools went away.</p>
<p>It's a bit like people in high level sports who take illegal steroids... absent the steroids, all they have is proof that they know <em>how to cheat</em>, not proof of <em>excellence</em>.</p>
<p>Maybe I'm just not "hip" or "with the times," but I prefer getting where I'm going as a result of knowing that I've done my best... because that establishes a sense of lasting value for me.</p>
<p><em><strong>How about YOU?</strong></em> Do you see the world-- and Steemit-- in terms of creating lasting value? Or are you more interested in what you can get "in the now?" Did the concept that things we put on the blockchain essentially are "forever" seem appealing when you joined the community? Or was that not part of your thinking? Do you like the idea of what you do and participate in leaving a "permanent mark" on the world? Leave a comment-- share your experiences and feedback-- be part of the conversation!</p>

I came to Steemit to be a part of the experience of building a social media platform based on blockchain technology. I think blockchain is THE wave of the future and I did not come her to make money. There are easier ways to get rich.

 I noticed you made references to you age..I'm "old" too, in relation to probably the majority of Steemit users, but being GenX makes me look forward to, and be willing to do the work. I enjoy reading long posts and interacting with the community created here, and I find this technology fascinating despite all of the single posts with only one image or a video, and no content. I think those activities will fade away as folks looking only for a quick buck learn the hard way. Cheers to us in the Pacific Northwest, too, @demarkguy!

I believe the idea here is that if they get rich quick, they can then become richer because people follow the money. I suppose to some extent that is true, but the one thing they have not built by taking the short-cuts is the social aspect of this platform. What they have created is a following that is just like them... only after the money and nothing more. I believe that money is just a small part of being happy. We are social creatures, so to have real friends that you can interact with and support each other is worth far more than a quick buck.

Those who made their following with the short-cut method will find that in times of trouble where they may have lost all their money, their following has also disappeared. Real friends will be there for you even if you don't have 2 cents to rub together!

Lot of truth there!

I have been working on a post about "following," and just how meaningless it actually is to pretend you can actively "follow" 1000 or more people. Nice looking "on paper" but no real basis in reality. It's ALL I can do to visit about HALF of the 400-odd people I have added as followers.

Build friends, build the social thing, create a *real* following for your content... and most people will notice how 50 "sincere" upvotes plus engagement will lead to better rewards than 200 "dust" upvotes.

Absolutely bang on about the followers thing. I used to look at the #introducemyself tag to try and find people to follow me and I did get a lot of followers that way. However, when I posted something, there were hardly any of my "followers" reading my posts. I soon gave up on that idea. I was always selective about the people I followed. If I saw something that interested me, I would check out the author and see what else they posted. If they churned out post after post just to get stuff out there but had no real interest (such as "look I just reached a new milestone") then I didn't bother to follow them. If they put out thought-provoking articles, then I tended to follow and actually READ (isn't that a novel idea?) what they wrote. However, the stream of posts come so fast and furious now that I am forced to scan my feed for anything that attracts my attention and a lot of material gets missed. And I don't even have that many people that I follow! It is becoming a full-time job just trying to keep up.

@kubbyelizabeth ·
It seems the steemit veterans are posting more and more about this very topic..
> *let people buy results, rather than earn them through time*

I couldn't agree more with you. Some hold a strong belief that the quicker we grow the more likely people are to stay. Others argue the slow growth allows for development of better writers. It also reveals which members are here for the long term gain despite the short term pain.

I see it as such, those that take the time to find true readers will succeed regardless of who comes and goes. You for example write excellent contest with thoughtful questions and receive comments some of us only dream of receiving.

> I compare it to my post and find mostly bots upvote or auto votes and actual readers are minimal.

Which is great because it tells me that I still have work to do, I still have to spend time curating and meeting new people on the platform to contect with.

It also tells me that the auto votes are little tokens of encouragement that keeps me motivated despite the slow grow.

I really like this community and its potential. I also understand it's a virtual world. I want to be balanced and not put to much time and effort in one and allow the other to suffer.

So to end my ramble, i think this community attracts users that will stay and users that will go. However, I have notice that those that stay at least a year have learned the value of hard work and benefit from it each time they post.

Do you agre? What are your thoughts? Am I missing the point?

Yes Einstein was right, Re("The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."). The dissaperence of the ancient tradition like passing down information by the older generation, is more or less gone today, or al least not very effective seen from my perspective. That is what this ever changing world/society has ended up as!, and I think this is a very dangerous rute for our World/society to take, because that means we will probably do the same mistakes again, because we never got the knowledge by the "elderly people" or older generation. Parallels can be drawn for the creation of a good steemit invironment with long lasting value. I agree with you denmarkguy and I think the "steemit community" need to listen when wisdom is shared :-)
Thanks for posting an important topic

Maybe I'm just getting OLD-- or "old fashioned"-- but I just don't see how you can expect to build something permanent and of lasting value through the use of a bunch of "quick gimmicks" and "schemes."

The part of my "being old" that perhaps could be characterized as "wisdom and experience" looks at that and says "It has been tried a thousand times before, and it didn't work THEN... and it's unlikely to work NOW."- I completely agree with this. To produce a meaningful and lasting change, you need to work towards a goal consistently and constantly work hard. I don't think using gimmicks is bad but yes I do believe, these shortcuts often distract you from quality and make you focus on quantity only which is why many of us who work hard to produce good quality work don't gain the recognition they deserve. One thing more, how fast we achieve results also depends on how fast we want to get there. If someone wants something real bad, he is likely to put in more effort than someone who wants it 50% less. As for me, I like to leave a permanent mark on the world and for that I make sure to do something meaningful consistently. Blogging here on Steemit is one of those things. Really liked your post btw!
