Winter seems to have finally arrived in our little corner of the world. Winter is somewhat of a "hit-or-miss" thing around here. Some years we go an entire season without a single snowflake, other years (like *last* season) we have as much as 8-10 measurable snowfalls and lots of freeze days. Since I am almost always *a geek with a camera,* I thought I'd turn this into a **#walkwithme** style post actually covering a *couple* of days. Just because I happen to like **@lyndsaybowen's** format. *Funny how a tiny twig — the thickness of a toothpick — can accumulate such a load* ## *So it Actually Started Yesterday...* It was a little colder than usual, when I went to work yesterday.

Time warp? Dimensional warp?

I even remarked to myself while I was driving in that it seemed like there were a couple of very wet snowflakes mixed in with the cold rain... then I gave it no further consideration. I work in a basement, six days a week... so there are no windows. Unless one of the customers who walk into our wee gallery/gift shop mentions something, I basically have *no* idea what the weather is like. Including yesterday. But I did notice... by about 2:30... that not a single soul had come down the stairs to visit. So I decided to walk UP, to see if there were some peculiar reason for this. First thing I see is this guy at the left, sitting outside a shop in a semi-blizzard. Clearly, he seems to be enjoying himself... I guess a moment of experiencing what St. Bernards are basically *built* for. No, I'm serious. The dog truly seemed to be having a good time, not *at all* distressed! Me? Not so much. We live in an area with small windy roads and hills, and because we're outside the city... sanding and plow trucks give *very low* priority to us. Time to close early and go home! Made it home, safely... about 20 minutes before the hilly streets near our house turned from "wet" to "icy slush covered in snow." Then the temperature started dropping fast... by midnight, we were at 22 (that's minus 6 for the metric folks) and still snowing. *Did* remember to fill the bird feeder, though! Our little feathered friends always seem to triple in numbers around the feeder, as soon as the white stuff starts to build up. And by this morning, it had built up nicely. This little guy was pretty happy that there was something "above ground" to nibble on.

Hummingbird in the snow

The hummingbirds were pretty unhappy, though. These tiniest of birds are *not* built for this sort of weather. Until moving here some 13 years ago, I always thought hummingbirds were a tropical/sub-tropical type of bird. Not so much. They were making lots of "chittery" noises at me, though, because their feeder was basically a sugar-water popsicle. Had to take it in and thaw it to room temperature, before putting it back out... I don't know *what* food sources hummingbirds have in the winter when there are no flowering plants. Makes me wonder whether they'd actually be *migrating* to warmer climes if humans had *not* started hanging feeders for them? I have always thought snow is very pretty... at least there is that short interval before it melts off the trees where the views can be quite magical... .... and, well... I'm *a geek with a camera.* I like the juxtaposition of *color* and all the whiteness... like this "frost on the pumpkin" shot. Yeah, I know, it's a bit prosaic. But for the same reason, I always liked living in places that had cardinals... the flashes of bright red against the snow in winter is a lovely sight! I don't fully understand the *physics* of this. Doesn't seem like it should be possible for such a load of delicate frosty snow to balance on these twigs. But there it is. It turned sunny by about noon, today. And soon enough, bits of green started poking through the white... here, the lavender in our back yard. This might not seem like a very interesting shot. It's the water tower on Protection Island, across the bay. What makes it "interesting" is that we pretty much *never* see the almost vertical escarpment *white* like that... but it was facing into the wind last night. Those slopes are typically dark gray, not pale. When you are used to that, it's a bit surreal. And so, I will end with this tiny patch of sun, just 30 minutes before sunset. We sometimes speak of *"The Golden Hour"* but when there is snow, it tends to be the *"Blue Hour."* Thanks for sharing in my snowy days! ## *P.S.: "Just a Post"* Sometimes, I think we get very wrapped up in creating "proper" posts and forget that social sharing and social media is mostly just about throwing various snippets of information around that we find interesting, in the moment. Or we get all concerned about making a *"proper"* post that is *"suitable for Steemit."* Making this simple photo sharing post was a nice "break" and reminder that sometimes it's better to simply *"keep it simple."* Thanks for reading! ***Comments, feedback and other interaction is invited and welcomed! That Saint Bernard really does look like he’s in heaven. Your post makes me wish I lived a little further out of the city and could enjoy seeing so many trees, song birds, and open spaces on a daily basis. Thanks for the *Just a Post*;-)
