Whether You're Investing or Trying to Get Known on Steemit, Consistency is Key!

<html>
<p>The world is filled with "<em>good advice</em>."&nbsp;</p>
<p>No matter where you turn, there is always someone who has a "<em>hot tip</em>" or a "<em>secret formula</em>" that will somehow lead you to success.</p>
<p>"<em>Get rich quick schemes</em>" abound, and yet most people <em>lose</em> money at them. Lots of startup businesses insist they have "<em>the greatest idea ever</em>" and yet? About 4 of 5 startups fail in their first three years.</p>
<p>And a whole group of people would want you to believe that "<em>they know best.</em>"</p>
<p>But who do you trust? And...</p>
<h2><em>ARE There Really Any "Secrets?"</em></h2>
<p>Here on Steemit, we have an interesting situation in the sense that this is <em>both</em> a content generation/social media site... <em>and</em> it's loosely tied to investing.</p>

<p>I say "<em>loosely</em>" tied, because the investing parts here are mostly<em> external </em>to the Steemit ecosystem... but contributors here do <em>write</em> a lot about cryptocurrency investments, and our own "<em>home</em>" currency is an investment of sorts if you aren't pulling it all out to buy pizzas and bling.</p>
<p>Maybe it's just part and parcel of the human experience that we tend to be an impatient lot, and always tend to look for "<em>shortcuts</em>" to achieve our goals. It just seems to be what most people do.</p>
<p>And yet... how does <em>actual success</em> (vs. "<em>theories</em>" and "<em>games</em>") tend to happen? Who are the true winners, in the long run?</p>
<h2><em>In the World of Investing</em></h2>
<p>If you have spent any significant time studying the stock markets and other investments, it's a fairly well-known reality that-- <em>in the long run</em>-- you tend to be better off investing in a market "<em>Index Fund</em>" than trying to pick and time individual securities in the market.</p>

<p>Sadly, most people lack the patience to simply "<em>park</em>" a sum of money somewhere and then come back and look at it, several years later. We believe that if we take an <em>active role</em> and try to come up with "<em>a system</em>" we surely must do better. This type of thinking tends to be supported by the stories we read about investors who got in at the "<em>ground level</em>" of some investment and multiplied their money by 100x in a relatively short time.</p>
<p>Heck, just look at Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dash!</p>
<p>Unfortunately, we only get to see the "<em>highlight reel</em>" and never hear about the 90% of the market participants who end up losing between 10% and 50% of their investments (sometimes more) in the course of a year... usually as a result of making ill-informed buy and sell decisions at the wrong time. In most cases, they would have been better off simply "<em>buying and holding.</em>"</p>
<p>Always remember this simple idea: Every time you <em>bought</em> something, someone else <em>sold</em> it. And whenever you <em>sold</em> something, someone else <em>bought</em> it.&nbsp;</p>
<h2><em>In the Social Media Game</em></h2>
<p>Steemit is-- ultimately-- a "<em>Social Content</em>" site, and thus the underlying mechanics here are not really <em>that </em>different from Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr or somewhere else.</p>

<p>However, because of the "<em>rewards factor</em>" here, a lot of people join Steemit with a certain sense of <em>urgency</em>-- they feel they <em>must</em> become seen and popular <em>now</em>... and they grow impatient with the fact that it is taking them <em>weeks and months</em> to develop even <em>a</em> small following.</p>
<p>So what's happening there?</p>
<p>Truthfully, have you even stopped for a moment to consider how long it took you to get 500 followers on twitter? Or make 500 "friends" on Facebook? Odds are, it took quite a long time.</p>
<p>So if we just for a moment completely <em>FORGET</em> that Steemit offers rewards, why would you think developing a following <em>here</em> would be any different?</p>
<p>I have been quite active on Facebook for over a decade-- including managing pages and groups-- and I barely have 1000 followers. My twitter account is also about 10 years old, and I have close to 1600 followers. Given that I know this information and acknowledge that it's a <em>real</em> reflection of my social media efforts (or skills)... why would my presence on Steemit suddenly cause the entire world to follow me?&nbsp;</p>
<p>Can't think of a good reason? Nor can I. And thus, it is actually <em>a small miracle</em> that almost 3,000 people here on Steemit have decided to follow me, <em>in just under a year</em>. And I am grateful to all of you!</p>
<h2><em>Just be CONSISTENT and Worry Less About the Numbers!</em></h2>
<p>So what's the moral of the story here?</p>

<p>In general, I would encourage you to put a little <em>less</em> energy into constantly worrying about your returns, or your number of followers... and instead put that energy into making <em>consistent</em> contributions, whether to your investment portfolio, or your blogging.</p>
<p>In investing, there's this great strategy called "<em>dollar cost averaging,</em>" where you just invest the same amount of money every month, regardless of whether the price is up or down. As a result, you end up buying <em>more</em> "units" when the price is low, and <em>fewer</em> units when the price is high. In the long run, it maximizes your returns.</p>
<p>In blogging, just keep producing quality content and interacting every day, regardless if whether any one post "<em>became popular,</em>" or not. Eventually, you'll notice your numbers starting to creep up. Ironically, what tends to happen is less that your "<em>richest</em>" posts become worth a lot more, instead it is the baseline of your "<em>poorest</em>" posts that keeps increasing. And that can make a <em>huge</em> difference, in the course of a couple of years.</p>
<p>In the meantime, DO remember to enjoy yourself! Life is much to short to not have some fun!</p>

I swear I’m more inclined to get content out when prices are low I just know people are devastated by the price drop and take that view of “oh now it’s not worth my time.” Except when it comes to things like cryptocurrency the best days ever to make as much of that coin where when it was not and just and later on all you have to do is hold onto and wait. 

As far as having any kind of patience that more comes down can I afford to have it in the first place. Sometimes if I can’t wait around then I need to try and force something to happen or move on.  While I wish I could it’s just not always an option.

I am an impatient blogger and investor, at least in my head. In actuality I am plodding away with both.

I'v only been here a month but got to 100 followers way faster than I expected and much fast than on FB.

At first I got really panicky about powering up and doing it at the right time then I a deep breath and went for consistency. now I power up what I have every morning, no matter how small, leaving $2 SBD and Steem in my account . . . just in case.

I've been keeping at it these last few days because, and I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, things seemed to have slowed down here.

It's early days but I'm trying to post at least twice a day and sometimes that is a big effort. Leaving comments is much easier for me because I have something to respond to.

How long I continue to be as consistent as I have been so far, remains to be seen.  &#128513;

Thanks for your posts @denmarkguy. You give me something worth commenting on every day!

Ha, interestingly, I was also distracted by the nice photographs, and as I can see from the comments, so were other people. Such nice birds! Amazing.

But I also agree with what you write. We are being trained to think short term, invest and immediately reap the benefits. This is not how investment works. Nor does knowledge. Even after so many years of studying philosophy, I feel I'm still inadequate to say I know anything much. Even though I feel blessed i found this platform to share whatever few insights I might have, and interact with people who are on a similar path of learning.

Thanks so much for this post @denmarkguy. This really resonates with me , and I hope to many other Steemians as well. I know it sounds cliche but I love this stuff. As I said before I like to go on others' blogs and interact/comment/contribute as much if not more than creating my own blog posts. It really is fun and stimulating.

For me, the timing and content of this post are extraordinary. This is my first social media foray, but not my first investment. I recognize the potential steemit holds for entertainment, education and profit. I believe steem to be a solid token to hold, so it makes sense to hold it in steem power and benefit from voting power and curation rewards. I appreciate the sage advice from an established Steemian.

I am using facebook for nearly 10 years now, and it took me all these time to get almost a thousand friends. One of the difference between facebook and steemit is that people follow you here based on the quality of your content, on facebook, a few selfie of your pretty face can earn you a thousand follower in one day. Not many people on facebook cared about the things i wrote about life, history, the poems - and thus, i couldn't become a widely followed person on fb. only my family, friends, and some work related people are added to that profile.

But finding steemit was like finding the online home for me. here, i have received much more appreciation and inspiration in just three months, than i had on facebook and other social media. here, i have found that my works are actually worth something, and here's where i was always meant to be. Though, the first couple of months were not that encouraging, but i had noticed that people above 50 reputation get a satisfying response, and once you reach the 60s - you are some force to recon with. I kept working on my posts, and kept asking the senior members what can i do to improve, which is still going on. after crossing the 50 barrier, I can see the responses to my posts are something to be hopeful, and it has made me sure of the success ahead if i keep working. To be successful here, you don't need to know the first thing about crypto and other technical stuff related to it. You just create contents about the things you love, the things you enjoy - if you enjoy them, others will too. A strong place on steemit is like a pyramid or a great wall that takes time to be built, and just like those, it stays strong, it makes you strong and noticeable and pays off big time.
After reaching the 50 reputation level, i have realized that the senior members actually tell the truth, if you hold on to it, and keep contributing to the community through producing good original contents, success will be your inshaAllah. I am absolutely agree with you, Consistency is Key!
