Banff Startrails

I'm on a mountain kick! Here's a familiar face to those who have driven through the Canadian Rockies: good ol' Mount Rundle, which looks over the town of Banff, Alberta, is reflected in the still water of Vermillion Lakes as the stars trail overhead.

I am a complete amateur in photography but i did have few chances of approaching nocturnal photography and it was such a peculiar experience; It was in Scotland, Isle of Skye. Totally transfixed by the beauty of the landscape during sunset...lost myself in that eerie fairylike place and encountered a dimly lit castle shrouded by pitch black darkness. It was actually my first time putting hands on things such as exposure but i had so much fun changing settings and made great pictures! I'll eventually post some of them as soon as i have a bit more of time :P

Great post and quite the inspirational one!

Oh my, what an excellent place to experience your first night shoot! Isle of Skye and castles....wow! There are no castles in Canada (not authentic ones, anyway), so you won't get into that predicament here, but if you mean my photo from Banff, I think you could take this any time there's open water on Vermillion lakes - between April/May and September/October would be my guess.

Looks like a ghost mountain! Is there any big source of light between the forest and the moutain to do this effect?

About the experience of take night shots, for sure the most amazing, at least for me, is the northern lights. Had the opportunity to do that in 2014.

Yes, the town of Banff is there! It creates some interesting effects - and there are some green lights off to the side as well - I'm not sure what those are from.

Norway in Tromsø and somewhere near Lyngen Alps and also in Iceland somewhere north from Borgarnes. But definitely the best place was in Tromsø.

Very beautiful photography @derekkind!
Star fish trails is what I see below and Star birds above.
That is truly a outstanding shot! Wonderful mountain, we
got to see it a couple times on trips, but no way as good
as your photo shows! Looks like a little bit of green aurora
there in the valley!

I've only taken a few night time shots over the years. Some
aurora, stars, comets. Tho I do love watching the night sky!
