 In the olden days you will have to seek out a spiritual master to be initiated into the practice of meditation. It was considered a sacred thing only a select few will be chosen to practice. 

The spiritual master will know who is fit for the practice and will decline to initiate anyone he deems not fit for the practice. 

In some traditions, the student will be put to stringent tests before being accepted. In others, once accepted, the discipline is extremely strict requiring hours of practice and constant supervision by the spiritual master. 

Fast forward to today, we have meditation centers offering to teach you meditation by self appointed gurus. They write books on meditation, conduct seminars, workshops and even offer online consultation through webinars. 

Under pressure, even some churches have jumped on the bandwagon. They used to decry meditation as the work of the devil!

Things have changed. Meditation is no longer a sacred thing. It is a business.

Howdy dear @devann.

I always thought that meditation should be practiced by everyone, ordinary people, housewives. We can all and need to benefit from the power of meditation.
Now here I have read:

This baffles me.

Then at the end of your post you say:

This disturbs me. Why would meditation be taken as a business?

Hello friend @juanmolina, 

In the Eastern religious traditions meditation was used for self realization. Self realization gives you the highest human potential. The goal is then the highest human potential and not some minor mental or health benefit that are being touted by the present proponents of meditation. When you are fully  self realized you become like Buddha or Christ himself according to these Eastern traditions. So the goal of meditation is spiritual and not material. When the goal is material then it becomes a business. 

The Eastern masters select only a few because only that few have the desire to be spiritual and have disposition to endure the discipline and hardship the practice demands. The master also do not charge anything for the teaching. Otherwise it becomes a business. 

The Eastern masters still continue that practice. There are many westerners who have chosen this path and have reached various levels of spiritual growth. 

However, those who are trying to profit from meditation, are now using it as a goal to achieve mundane material benefits like mental and physical health. The goal is no longer spiritual; it is material. They charge a fee for their teachings too. That is why I called it a business.
