I'm Trying to Enter this Gig Economy
Okay hold it right there, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I still have a corporate job and no I'm not quitting. Well, maybe not by choice. Don't get me wrong, I do love what I'm doing. It's just that the craziness around us makes me worried lol. But can you blame me? Knowing me, this economy, I could literally lose everything in a snap. And there's the nagging societal expectations like I'm not getting any younger, I'm still single, I'm not a home-owner, and there's no one to take care of me. Basically, this whole gig economy thing is just in case I lose my job (which can happen if you're diabolical or because there's another upcoming variant of germs out there or there's mass lay off or God knows what else). Anything can happen right. And I'm just here seeing beyond the moment and preparing for the worst.

Economic crisis is the worst aside from the people who make this happen. There's absolutely no such thing as job security anymore. Because honestly, we are just our jobs' means to an end. Remember, the Man doesn't care even if you prove to be super super loyal and have gained so much browny points all throughout your corporate tenure. You can be let go too. We should only be thinking about ourselves and what's the best for us.

I happened to unearth my Upwork account, didn't even know that I have it for a long time. I think I attempted to create this profile back when I was still traveling around South America. Maybe I was too busy having fun that I forgot to worry about my future. Anyway, so I updated my profile hoping that it will stand out. But gosh, I feel like I'm just a tiny drop of water in this vast sea of freelancers. All competing for attention and a bit of $$$. Here you can get the cheapest labor possible but damn. How will I ever thrive in this so-called gig economy?

I'm not being negative I'm just trying to see if the reality fits my expectations a bit. I'm not sure how this will pan out but I might as well try. Nothing to lose. So I uploaded some of my data visualization stuff for my portfolio. Thankfully I've gained some pretty important skills over the past few years that I think I could market around here. But it does feel like starting a business again. Now I'm gonna scrounge for first clients and reviews. Reviews are important because without it how can people trust me? And this means I'm gonna have to lower my asking price for now until I have enough clients/reviews. Ugh, it's cutthroat.

As always, I need to keep my expectations low. Good thing I still have a job that seem stable lol. Or am I the unstable one? I'm not ready to be full on independent contractor yet but I can use all the time to slowly build my profile and gain clients. It can be exciting to trying something new too especially if it makes money. I spend so much time on the internet might as well earn a bit more. The thing is my work is task-oriented and I've pretty much automated most of my tasks that I now have too much time on my hands. Gotta drive those demons away. And since my plan is to move back to the city soon, I figured I will need some extra income so I can buy more stuff that I don't need lol. Just kidding. No, this is just in preparation for my stress-free digital nomadic life that I'm hoping for in the future. Yessss, working on it! I must say, Hive is still the best freelance work/hobby that really makes money by far. And no, crypto is not a scam lol.

Gig economy workers/ freelancers, you may post your advice. :)

My cat telling me to stop pretending that I'm busy.

Self-employed person advice. Five bank accounts: IN, TAX, EXPENSE, TAN(K) & Living. All income goes into IN. Then percentages go to TAX, EXPENSE and TANK. You setup an automatic payment (living AP) from TANK to Living expenses and you live/save from living expenses. TANK is basically "drawings" but setup for easy monitoring. Like, ideally you'd have an idea of how deep tank needs to be for your situation. For me, i like to keep mine between 13 and 7 fortnightly payments deep. When tanks is low, then time to look for more work, if tank is high then maybe I can treat myself/save more. Anyway, this means I'm not short on tax or money to run the business plus I have a way (tank depth) to see how the business is actually going. Do I need more work, better paying work, or can I rest a bit etc.

I see I think I'm doing this already somewhat although I only have 3 accounts (source/payroll, no- touch acct/savings, expense..) I just move them around. And I always have to keep that no touch at certain amount so I don't have to worry. It's liberating knowing how to do this. Do I actually need 2 more bank accounts?

No, but I find it easier to mentally separate things like this. Note that tank and personal expenses are not "inside" the business. Reality is my personal accounts are messier than just two... but I'm transiting. And, tax account is makes the discipline easier imo.
