For the last four days, I've not had any physical money on me. Now, this is 2023, and I firmly believe we are hurtling towards an electronic payments-only society anyway, so in theory, it shouldn't matter. I don't carry any cards either; I use my mobile for payments, so generally, it's not a problem. The one downside is small shops such as my local newsagents can't afford [WorldPay's](https://www.fisglobal.com/en-gb/merchant-solutions-worldpay) exorbitant charges for a 27p transaction, so generally make a rule of "£3.00 minimum spend".

This morning I decided to visit a cash point (ATM for our American cousins) and, armed with £50, visited my local sandwich bar come cafe for the worker's breakfast of poached egg on toast with a bit of salt and pepper.

**Me:** "I've got actual money this morning, but you're going to hate me."

*I handed over a £10 note to pay for my £2.30 sandwich*

**Cafe:** "I can't do it! I don't have enough change."

**Me** "Well, I can pay by card, but you have a minimum purchase, don't you?"

**Cafe:** "Three pounds."

**Me:** "So I'm back to spending more! I dunno why I bothered getting cash?"

**Cafe:** "I'll make a note we owe you seventy pence."

**Me:** "With interest! I want interest!"
