Shadow Hunters / SMASh Contest - Round 260 - my Entry "Totentanz"

Hello Shadowhunters!

My photo contribution "Dance of Death" to this week's shadow competition by @melinda010100 shows a shadow installation by the artist Christian Boltanski entitled "Vanitas" in the choir crypt of the Salzburg Cathedral.

The art project actually invites you to create shadow photos. Attached are 3 more photos of this artwork (out of competition).

The installation consists of a dozen small sheet metal figures lit by candles, creating shadowy figures on the wall that seem to dance in the flickering light. The installation symbolizes a kind of dance of death.

The mystical mood created in this way suits the space, because the choir crypt was a consecrated church room and also served as a burial place (sepulture).

The artwork also includes a projection of an angel of death slowly circling in the room while an automatically repeating time announcement sounds. With this work of art, which consists of visual and acoustic components, Christian Boltanski wanted to make it possible to hear how time elapses when watching the dance of death. He said of his work: "Men can do much, but they cannot fight against time. God is the lord of time."

Mein Fotobeitrag "Totentanz" zum dieswöchigen Schatten-Wettbewerb von @melinda010100 zeigt eine Schatteninstallation des Künstlers Christian Boltanski mit dem Titel "Vanitas" in der Chorcrypta des Salzburger Doms.

Das Kunstprojekt lädt tatsächlich zum Erstellen von Schattenfotos ein. Anbei 3 weitere Aufnahmen des Kunstwerks (außer Konkurrenz).

Die Installation besteht aus einem Dutzend kleiner Figuren aus Metallblech, die von Kerzen beleuchtet werden, wodurch sich Schattenwesen an der Wand abzeichnen, die durch das flackernde Licht zu tanzen scheinen. Die Installation symbolisiert eine Art Totentanz. Die so erzeugte mystische Stimmung passt zur Räumlichkeit, denn die Chorkrypta war ein geweihter Kirchenraum und diente auch als Grablege (Sepultur). Zum Kunstwerk gehört auch eine Projektion eines Todesengels, der langsam im Raum kreist, während eine sich automatisch wiederholende Zeitansage ertönt. Christian Boltanski wollte mit diesem aus visuellen und akustischen Komponenten bestehenden Kunstwerk erreichen, dass beim Betrachten des Totentanzes hörbar ist, wie die Zeit verrinnt. Er sagte über sein Werk: "Die Menschen können viel tun, aber sie können nicht gegen die Zeit kämpfen. Gott ist der Herr der Zeit."
