Then growing up in a family compound just by the default community 'central playing ground' is a different flex entirely. That is where I grew up with siblings and cousins always making sure that there's no dull moment. And whenever they're not there the central playground (which is actually a primary school) filled in graciously for them. So there I am, on my grandfather's tomb chilling, or perhaps dozing while my cousins and siblings were playing. A typical me, always antisocial and reticent. I was smacked out of my little melancholic doze by the impact of the rubber ball they were kicking about. Turning to face them, I was met with a chorus of laughter that simply told me they did it on purpose and there's no need for retaliation or display of anger as that would only spur them on to make more ridicule of me. As I descended the few steps that led to the top of the tomb while rubbing my palms across my face in an attempt to erase any trace of dust that must've been left there by the impact of the ball, I noticed my elder brother, cousin, and their friend leaving the house for their usual big boys outing. They were all dressed up with baggy jeans, oversized t-shirts and shoes, with scarves on their head, and fake designer wristwatches on their wrists. *"now that's the life I want to live"* I thought immersed in my subconscious as I waved a goodbye to them while smiling awkwardly. There was no return of the wave and that brought me back to the consciousness of my surroundings and the weirdness of my actions. I know they must've thought that I have graduated from loner to weirdo, so I just walked into the house. This was my wishful thinking for a few years and by the time I turned 15, my elder brother and his friends were encouraging me fulfill my dreams and get a girlfriend. *"that's the true sign of maturity"* I can remember them telling me one day *"can't you see that this girl likes you"* they would chorus whenever any girl showed signs of shyness wherever I'm present. *"you can even have your own stack of letters for fun"* my elder brother's friend would always say. This was because they all had stacks of letters in their rooms and we always used it for fun every Saturday. They'd bring out the good, the bad and the ugly and we'd read and laugh at the grammatical errors and the naivety of these girls just for fun. Some would even go as far as mimicking the writer just to hear how it would sound in her voice. I knew deep down that no matter my level of resistance, it was only a matter of time before my defenses were broken. It is a rainy day, and here I am chilling with my people when this girl walks into our compound and came straight to our house. The rain drizzling and making soothing melody with her umbrella drove nails of compassion and emotions into my heart. She is a true melanin, with natural pink lips and a bosom heaving rhythmically as if dancing to the tune of the rain and umbrella. I was moved but motionless, staring blankly into her face with which she had covered with the umbrella *"sign of shyness"* I thought triumphantly to myself while licking my lips. And when she parted her lips to let words out, it felt like the words were bouncing happily through my eardrums. Everything just felt happy and fulfilling, I wasn't feeling cold again but warmth as if she was a burning flame eating up the water like the ancient Bible miracle. But deep down there was a feeling, subtle as it was, but it was there. A realization that this feeling isn't from a sincere place, but as a result of the constant feed fed to it by my siblings and cousins. Well, that doesn't matter and I was caught up in the moment and immediately she left, the chorus resumed. I smirked like I didn't care and went into the room secretly to write my own letter to my 'first love'. The ink flowed directly from the heart and splattered onto the pages of the paper and the expressions that emerged made me proud. Letter written and delivered, I beamed and puffed when the reply came in and I was about to be a boyfriend. Now I am mature. The relationship hasn't started when the first request came in, she needs 3,000 naira ($6) to make her hair. Stunned, because I have no money and I can't tell my people because I know they'd laugh at me. That was when I realized that my feelings were not from a sincere place, and I wasn't ready to be mature yet. I immediately found fault in her and broke up with her.
