Olympus Prime lenses upgrading the kit lenses

So Hive Photography people as you may recall about month or so ago I got my first real SLR camera in about 20 years and I’ve really been enjoying using the Olympus OMD E-M5 with the 14-42mm and 40-150mm kit lens so much so I decided it was time to invest in a couple of new lenses. The PRO series are a bit out of my price league at around £1000+ each on average so after watching a few hours on YouTube I decided to take a punt on the Olympus Zuiko Premium series lenses which give a good balance between quality and price. A really Big thanks to Robin Wong for his YouTube channel which invaluable in helping me make the choice.

Olympus make 3 premium prime lenses a 17mm F1.8 wide  a 25mm F 1.8 standard and a 45mm F1.8 telephoto/portrait The Olympus OMD cameras use a micro 4/3 sensor which effectively doubles the focal length of the lenses so on a standard full frame SLR that would give you a 34mm wide the standard 50mm and a 90mm telephoto. It does make the camera and lenses much smaller that full frame which is great for travelling.

In the end I decided to invest in the 17mm F1.8

and 45mm F1.8 lenses which have arrived this week.

One of the big gripes people have with Olympus is the lenses don’t come with lens hoods which would give the front of the lens some protection and make shooting in bright conditions a bit easier. And as I found out they are a bit expensive at £60 each for the genuine Olympus versions, but that’s why I have a 3D printer. True the Olympus ones for the premium lenses are metal not plastic but still.

After a bit of digging around on** Thingiverse** I found an STL for lens hoods to fit the 2 kit lenses and the 45mm prime which use bayonet fitting. But it was a bit of design work on **Tinkercad** to sort out one for the 17mm F1.8

As that just has a small raised ring at the front of the lens so I just locked it in place with a 2.5mm grub screw.
