The Cape Gooseberry, an interesting low maintenance addition to my garden

The Cape Gooseberry (Physalis Peruviana) is a plant I grew up with. It is also the one berry I can't get enough of. There are 300 to 500 seeds in a berry but every time I want to plant some I have to buy seeds because I ate all the berries.

Cape Gooseberries grows easily from seed but the seeds have a low germination rate. You use a lot of seed when you plant. You can grow it from cuttings too but that is a lesson in itself. I grew mine from seed, I have never even tried growing it from cuttings.

I love Cape Gooseberries in my garden and it is a good addition to a food forest because it is perennial an low maintinance. I trim mine down after the harvers so it can sprout again.

I found a lot about Cape Gooseberries online but I have never seen one higher than three foot in the 50 years I have known about it. It grows in forests and loves edges. It also likes [riparian](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riparian_zone) zones.

Mine I grow in pots. I pot almost everything so I can move it when needed.

A fun fact to remember is that when you plant the Cape Gooseberry in weak soil go get a bigger harvest. When planted in rich soil it grows a lot of leaves and stems and less fruit. This characteristic makes it the perfect starter for a new garden with poor soil if you want to plant something you can harvest.

It grows well in most regions but keep in mind that it does not like frost. It's a sun loving plant that needs six hours of direct sunlight a day.

This is just a rough overview. While I can drown you in information it will be much more fun to grow some in your garden. For myself I am going to see what happens if I use it as part of a guild with a Moringa tree.

The fun part of Cape Gooseberries is in the eating. There is no better reason to plant it. The harvest is spread over about 3 months so you will have berries for a while. It also stores well if you leave the jacket on. It can last a couple of weeks when stored with the jacket on, without it stays good d'or à few days.

The work you put in is worth every bit because, other than eating it off the plant, Cape Gooseberries gan be used in the most delicious and interesting recipes. Just keep in mind, eat the fruit not the plant. The plant is poisonous.

The Cape Gooseberry is a really interesting plant and will always be part of my garden adventure.
