Every tree needs a guild. Now if guild is an unfamiliar term, simply put, it's a collection of compatible plants grouped under a tree for maximum use of space vertically and horizontally and other benefits.

Now that sounds like a lot but it says nothing about why.

When I were young I always thought a tree is much happier with a lot of friends at its feet. It turns out there may be some truth to this.

Trees has this awesome water pumping system that keeps it going. It can pump water for more than 300 feet. We used to think this is because of capillary forces. Turns out capillary forces cannot lift water that high. At night trees do something amazing though.

The awesome thing is that at night a little bit of this flow gets reversed. When the sun goes down the tree let's back enough water to form little droplets of water along its roots. These droplets of water contains chemicals that helps dissolve chemicals from the sand and even rocks. This is a very slow process. In time the tree roots can even drill through rock. Amazing isn't it.

This isn't the only amazing thing that happens. The tree is actually watering its food factory at its feet filled with all kinds of organisms. It brings water from deeper levels of the soil in amounts that won't drown anything.

When it is the dry season, the tree can still reach water and keep its good factory at it's roots going.

Why should there be plants at the tree's feet then. Well, the food factory is filled with all kinds of organisms that needs biomatter for food. It needs more in volume and diversity than what the tree can supply.

The flow back does not produce enough to sustain the plants under the tree permanently but it keep things going.

A guild then is not only to the advantage of the gardener. It helps the tree through biodiversity.

These are things I keep in mind to build a happy garden.
