Hi there. In this education post, I talk about some cases where online learning may not be ideal for young students. It is not like these tech skills can be grasped in an instant. It does take time, practice to get better and faster with online tools and technology. For young students from the ages of 5 to 10, learning how to use technology can be a lot on top of them learning basic reading, writing and mathematics. Tasks such as refreshing a page, turning the webcam on, upload a page, zooming in and out sound like basic tasks for many adults but for younger students it may not be so trivial. These tasks do require a bit of knowledge of how to use a computer mouse for clicking. Typing for young kids is not that easy as they have to adjust the keyboard layouts, find out which letters are where before typing words. Figuring out symbols such as &, ^ and * is not that easy as it requires a combination of keys such as SHIFT + 8 (Windows) which is not really natural for fingers. <center><img src="https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2015/12/15/06/42/kids-1093758_960_720.jpg" /></center> <center><a href="https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2015/12/15/06/42/kids-1093758_960_720.jpg">Pixabay Image Source</a></center> ### Audio, Video & Other Technological "Distractions" --- For young students, the computer is also a source for online browsing, online videos and video games. Some young students may not have self-discipline to focus on the online lessons and learn. They may doze off, turn off the audio and do something else other than learning such as online browsing, texting friends, watching Youtube, listening to music, etc. Distractions will always be around. It is up to the student to not give in to these distractions. Loud background noises causes inconveniences to others who are on the video call. The computer(s) being used is not powerful enough for online learning and online videos. It'll be interesting to see how schooling works in several weeks when schools supposedly open up. Currently, the transition to online, or even a hybrid one, seems to be somewhat messy.

Yes, it would be interesting to see what would happen with elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities when it comes to adopting online teaching. I think there was a Toronto news article online talking about high school students who just graduated that are considering a gap year after graduation. These students do not like the idea of doing online classes in first year university so they are thinking of "taking a break" until things go back to normal.

That's interesting. I am someone who advocates remote learning- remote working but this pandemic tells me that world is not ready. I was introduced to this idea of remote learning when I was in junior high. I found it revolutionary then and I was hoping the world would adapt. But truth is, not. When I went to university, I was amazed how many people I met are behind when it comes to technology. And in my highschool, laptop was required and we use a lot online test and stuff, I even took computerized online national exam and our school was the pilot school. So many of my peers and including me are already familiar with digital test system. Now I realized, I and some of my peers may have been so fortunate.
