There are a variety of ingredients in food items today that have become popular items for people to try and avoid, including things like *caramel color, canola oil, azodicarbonamide, aspartame, and other substances*. 

## Synthetic preservatives like sodium nitrate, and others like sodium phosphate, have been previously linked to cancer and are commonly found in many deli meat items today, including ham, bacon, and more.
<center> </center> A number of supermarket ham and bacon items today <b>have been found to contain pointless chemicals</b> that allegedly *provide no effect* on <b>[botulinum bacteria](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6845851/Supermarket-ham-bacon-contain-pointless-chemicals-linked-cancer.html)</b>, and do little more than help to maintain the pink color of the meat.

A recent report that had been commissioned <b>by the British Meat Processors Association</b> discovered that the chemicals which are frequently added to supermarket meat products <b>have little to no practical effect</b>, but could be substantially harmful to our health.

## The study examined <b>the growth of *[Clostridium botulinum](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6845851/Supermarket-ham-bacon-contain-pointless-chemicals-linked-cancer.html)*</b> for both nitrite-cured meat samples and those that were nitrite-free, they discovered that there was no significant growth of the bacteria in either of the samples. 
<center></center> There might not be <b>[any good reason](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/supermarket-ham-bacon-contain-pointless-14182200)</b> to add these potentially cancer-causing chemicals into the meat products. Nitrites have been considered to be a <b>pointless</b> yet potentially harmful preservative and those companies that are still loading their meat products this way would do better <b>to reverse the trend</b>.

Various health organizations have deemed <b>[processed meat to be carcinogenic](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/2015/11/03/report-says-eating-processed-meat-is-carcinogenic-understanding-the-findings/)</b> and critics might argue that it's not because of the meat itself, but because of all of the harmful chemicals that have been added to it, and that no study on quality, organic, grass-fed meat, has produced results to suggest it'd be equally harmful. 

# These ingredients are added in to supposedly improve food quality but what they might be doing is making it potentially more harmful. 
<center> </center> The average person today still consumes *a great deal of processed food* and consider that digestive illnesses and cancer is widely prevalent. Right now, it's estimated that colon cancer is the 3rd most *commonly occurring cancer in men* and the [2nd second most](https://www.cancer.org/cancer/colon-rectal-cancer/about/key-statistics.html) *commonly occurring cancer in women*. While food not be *the whole answer* to solving the problem, it could definitely be a contributing factor. And we should take the time to think about why we are consuming products, or doing business in such a way, that uses <b>arguably useless but potentially harmful</b> chemicals.
