I own and work in my own spa. A lot of clients tip and a couple don't. Tipping shouldn't be prompted but it shows appreciation for a job well done and more so if they are a regular client.

Not trying to be combative but I am reading replies from a lot of uninformed consumers.  Almost every state has laws that let tipped employees to be paid less. I am a Regional Manager for Restaurants in Los Angeles. Most states, on average, pay their service staff $3 to $4 an hour. So as I'm reading  all these " I only tip when I feel like it" replies,  Just know someone was paid $3 with no guarantee for more money except the opportunity of a tip while you and your family sit at one of their tables and enjoy your meal for an hour. I am SURE if that server was your son or niece you would be really upset if they only made $3/hr and was not tipped.

Tiping is not necessary. It should be on the customer if they want to give.

When I was a student I dont give any tip but yes I do give tip now whenever I go to restaurants. 

One thing you should consider that some restaurants include service charges in bill. So no need to give tip there.

I think it should only be seen as a bonus for the waiters. Service charges included and customers only need to tip for an excellent service.

tipping shouldn't be prompted, it should be voluntarily and when i tip it depends on my mood and pocket,lol.

I hate tipping. I prefer to pay the price that comes in the menu an nothing more. This way it is easier to know exactly how much you're gonna pay.

Tips should be earned and based on how satisfied the customer is to the service provided. It also gives incentive to provide better service. I usually tip for standard service, and tip more when i feel the service is outstanding. I would be upset to tip someone who are not friendly and seems unhappy doing their work

I think you should tip the waiters and waitresses, but nicer ones deserve more than ones that don't care about the people.

I typically tip but I think it needs to be earned. I have had some down right terrible service before. Once a waiter spilled water all over our table and my lap. Didn't apologize and basically didn't get anything to clean up it till we asked him. I'd be very upsetting if I had to tip for that.

Another interesting topic to think about. Ya know...I live out here in Vegas and it's just normal to tip. I usually do not even think twice about it. For restaurants, you really have to do a sh*tty job to make me even think about altering the tip. But I still tip. I do not have really many bad experiences. If service is slow I do take notice how busy a place is and if they are understaffed. Which is typically the case and if that is the case I NEVER let that alter the tip. 

One time with my two children we were at a restaurant and they were busy. And our poor server was getting killed. It was slow but we still had a good time. When we got the bill I could tell he was apologetic. So I gave him a nice tip and thanked him for taking care of us. He looked SHOCKED. But I think it goes back to the "Kindness Contagion" piece you wrote.  Perhaps this set a series of positive things to come from it. And I still had great time with my kids anyway.

Keep it the way it was for years-- let them earn a tip more than a standard tip. People know. I hope.

Tips are something that you give in relation to the quality of service you've got.

When the service or food was good, you should tip accordingly imo, but it should never be an obligation.

It seems like the cost living is increasing at a faster rate than the wages and thus this is being transferred to the customer therefore resulting in them being prompted to pay a higher tip as the businesses less likely to increase the pay of their employees.

i was born and raised in the US and i pay tips  to the waiters but since i move to asian countries they don't take tips and they get offended when they get them, very different cultural differences.

Many people have stated 'tipping is important. I need it to survive....'.  If that is true, the company is not paying enough.  Tipping should be a reward for good service, not part of the basic pay check.

Tips should be earned. I remember that, when I was living in Canada, the waiters are actually taxed on the potential tips they receive, more or less 11%. So that means that if they did not get any tips from customers: 1) they were not happy and 2) they were taxed on a missing 11% anyway.

The tipping custom in the US is weird, no doubt about it. I would prefer to see wait staff paid a standard wage, and tips be a voluntary gift rather than a necessary payment in lieu of wages.

I suspect the tax system, wage laws, and old tradition combine to a hard-to-overcome *status quo.*

Some places that you order then pick up your food, if they ask for tip there just being greedy. you really shouldn't have to tip because that's just standard you ordered and you picked it up. However if you sit down anywhere even for a minute then your being served and a tip should be given.

I have worked as a server as well as in the kitchen.  I started out in the kitchen and decided to switch to the front of house because they make more money.  I have also been a restaurant manager and quit to go serve because I made more money as a server.  I also quit hairstyling to be a server, because it pays better than professions that require a red seal!!   If you think the kitchen gets a fair share, or that your server wouldn't throw them under the bus in a heartbeat to save their own ass when they screw up, you are probably mistaken.  I don't think any server deserves their tip just for being there.  If they do not take care of your needs, make you feel welcome and have you leaving feeling good, then what are they there for? By tipping a bad server you are guaranteeing that they will never change/get better/ give up and go get a job they can do right....ensuring bad service forevermore.  I also believe taxation is theft , so working as a server is a great way to avoid paying taxes.

You should always tip 15%. Any more is actually the tip in my opinion

I serve at a restaurant in Disney world.  At least with serving and in most cases tipping is essential for us to make a living.  @jeffjagoe most of the time a included tip, is just a suggested tip.  A tip can be completely removed or if you liked the servicec you can increase the tip to compensate appropriately.  Not only is the hourly wage for most servers next to nothing, but in most resturaunts especially major corporate ones the server is expected to "tip-out" anywhere from 3 to 6% of their sales.  At my particular place of business it is 4%.  A percentage of that tip out goes to the bar, hostess, and busers.  This is a part of a  bigger problem where these corporate places are using the servers to pay the labor for other positions in the restaurant.  All these other positions being tipped out  rely on the servers sales for their income as well.  Also if a no tip is left at all for the server they still pay out of pocket to serve the table.   Serving tables is like being a 1099 contractor, we pay for all our own supplies and equipment( shoes, uniform, office supplies, etc.)  and essentially are just leasing the space or "station" we have in a restaurant.   The food the ambiance and theme is the product we represent and sell.

Tipping is very IMPORTANT.  I am not saying all service deserves one cause sometimes someone really sucks at their job but it is essential part of our income for servers and the other service support staff.

Yeah man, tipping has gotten out of hand at some places! They even incalculate in sometimes without mentioning it. I don't think tipping should be incalculated. I am a poor student and really only do it if I received a good  service and if I think they deserved it.

When ever a waiter/waitress is a happy person with good vibes i always leave a tip and the service is good , not only for the person who serve me but for the chef also

In Australia we generally never tip, but I think a lot of Aussies like myself will tip when the person serving goes above and beyond whats expected and deserves it. I don't like it when tips are just expected, me personally I think it's just rude. Cheers

I myself, like to tip.  I understand that the attendant relies heavily on tips to commiserate  his hourly wage.  If the attendant has been pleasant and of good service, why wouldn't you tip well.  It's the old adage, "Do unto others as you would want them to do to you."  So pay back their good service with your attitude of gratitude in the form of a good tip.  For poor service, adjust likewise.
