https://images.hive.blog/DQmNqj5euXg52dxJsr494hJdebnv2oXUsaj1dkmsJKZwBNv/finance23.png # Why is the state involved in the market?

For safety? *For affordability?* For quality of life? ## How do we judge their failure or success?

If for example we see that shelter options have become so far out of reach for so many in many major cities around the world then are we to come to the conclusion that the state has done a good job at securing this area of the market? How involved are they in the market from start to finish? If they are to be seen in exchanges throughout the industry then why aren't we seeing better results? ... Might their extensive involvement make things slower or worse, *could that even be possible?* # What would better results look like?

Would a better market in this space offer more variety in physical options as well as price selection? How long until we see that reality in housing where the industry could readily respond to this important need for billions of people? Why are we told that it is going to take X amount of unacceptable years to build enough homes to reach *current demand we see today* and by then the demand will be even worse, will they ever catch up? If not then *why not*? When we see demand go up at a restaurant at lunch the influx of burger orders doesn't cripple the restaurant for decades. They respond by addressing the need as quick as possible and *making more burgers*. They pressure corporations to justify prices at times, but do they care about any price increases that are related to inflation? Do they think that one can run up never ending debt and not see any consequences? If that is the case then why not just print more then? If there are consequences then what do they look like? Are hard-working innocent individuals throughout society going to pay the price for a decision that they might not have agreed to go along with in the first place? How do we judge if the quality of life and cost of living has gotten better or worse? Many Americans have fallen behind on rent or are unable to afford a one bedroom apartment altogether despite working. A large number of people are working multiple jobs just to afford shelter and food with little else if anything left after paying for basics. The cost of living not only has millions struggling and wondering if they might be prepared for retirement or possibly end up homeless, it's also preventing many young adults today from starting a family. The cost of living is a top concern with billions of voters around the U.S. and elsewhere. It is going to take some meaningful changes in areas like housing for people to possibly *be less concerned* about the cost of living and affordability in general. How long will it be until we see some significant changes that will dampen those worries, *or will they only grow worse*? What is that going to mean politically as well if people become more desperate? Perhaps we will see some drastic political changes up ahead. with the shrinking of the middle class, housing is becoming fast less affordable. Even though interest rates are declining, that could be the plan.

If you'll parson some self-promotion, [I wrote a post detailing many of the ways financial prospects are worsening.](https://peakd.com/hive-122315/@jacobtothe/showing-my-receipts-millennials-and-the-wider-economy) Housing costs are just one piece of a much larger picture. Our "free market economy" is heavily manipulated by political intervention, but critics of the *status quo* want to blame only the market as they call for more government control. We're screwed if we rely on politics for progress.
