Germany is, mostly due to Expressionist classics of first decades of 20th Century, seen as the birthplace of horror cinema. The trend of grand German horror films, however, ended with Weimar Republic and German cinema in subsequent decades never paid much attention to horror genre. One of the rare exception to the rule was *Anatomy*, 2000 film directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky.


The protagonist is Paula Henning (played by Franka Potente), young woman who dreams about attending medical school at prestigious Heidelberg University, elite institution where her father and grandfather earned their degrees. She receives notice that she was accepted and during the travel in train saves the life of David (played by Arndt Schwering-Sohrney), young man whose life is always in danger because of rare heart condition. Soon after arriving she begins attending anatomy class held by highly respected Professor Grombek (played by Traugott Buhre). There she, much to her surprise, finds David’s body among corpses uses as teaching tool for students. Intrigued, she begins to investigate and finds that cause David’s death isn’t exactly natural. Although anyone, including her sex-obsessed friend Gretchen (played by Anna Loos), tell her to drop her investigation and dedicate herself to studies instead, Paula continues and discover terrible secret. The University is home to secret society dedicated to experiments barred by medical ethics. Her attempt to alert authorities fails and instead Paula must watch out for the mysterious assassins who might be among her friends and colleagues. 


In its essence, *Anatomy* isn’t that different from Hollywood slasher films made in previous decades and employs many of their cliches, including character’s chances of surviving being inversely proportional to his or her promiscuity. However, the rather unoriginal plot (covered very effectively by Michael Chricton in *[Coma](https://inleo.io/film/@drax/retro-film-review-coma-1978)* many decades ago) isn’t that important as Ruzowitzky’s ability to employ specific style and create atmosphere of dread much better than most of his Hollywood counterparts. Neatly organised operating rooms and morgues full of bodies make the film disturbing at the very beginning. Franka Potente, an actress who few years earlier became international star thanks to *[Run Lola Run](https://inleo.io/film/@drax/retro-film-review-run-lola)*, is handling her role very well. Anna Loos in the role of protagonist’s friend is also very good, although the male audience would probably pay more attention to her shapely body than acting abilities. Benno Fürmann in the role of Gretchen’s boyfriend, on the other hand, isn’t that convincing. What ultimately makes this film successful is ironic approach, which could be seen in unconventional epilogue that takes place during closing credits. *Anatomy* thus proves itself as one of nowadays rare German contributions to horror genre. European audience agreed with this verdict and *Anatomy* received sequel titled *[Anatomy 2](https://inleo.io/hive-121744/@drax/film-review-anatomy-2-anatomie-2-20)* in 2003.
