Retro Film Review: The Last Marshal (1999)

In the past decade Hollywood conditioned audience to expect film law enforcers to be kinder, gentler and more "politically correct" than average people on the street. Antidote to such prevailing trend might be represented in characters that resemble protagonist of *The Last Marshal*, 1999 action thriller directed by Mike Kirton.

When the film starts it becomes painfully obvious that Cole McClary (played by Scott Glen) is unapologetically racist, sexist and homophobic US Marshal. In the rest of USA such views are incompatible with federal law enforcement, but McClary's bosses tend to ignore them as long as McClary, proud native of Texas, produces results in his work. When he fails to prevent bloodshed during the botched kidnapping of Federal judge Wooley (played by Ken Jenkins), his career is on the ropes. McClary, although wounded in the incident, decides to find the perpetrators and the trail leads to Miami. There, in the multi-ethnic metropolis, he would have to rely on the help of colleagues with more open and tolerant minds.

Scott Glenn might be one of the most dependable character actors in America, but even his talents can't salvage the role that is nothing more than a caricature. In an attempt to resurrect the vigilante spirit that made Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson famous, Kirton and his co-writer Scott Wiper went a little bit too far and created character that would be more at home in subversive comedies like Santiago Segura's *[Torrente](https://peakd.com/film/@drax/retro-film-review-torrente-the)*. Unfortunately, *The Last Marshal* is devised as straightforward serious thriller and McClary's extreme views are too uncomfortable for most of the audience, despite scriptwriters' lame attempts to reform his character in the second half of film. But the biggest problem is lack of budget and lack of inspiration - *The Last Marshal* with its Miami setting, Latin American drug lords and European uebervillains looks like a cheap 1980s action film brought from time warp into 1990s. Comparison between two generational mindsets is unworthy of having to sit through this film.

RATING: 2/10 (-)
