Market Friday goes to St. Kitts

<center>It's all about the color! For me, the vivid colors attract my attention and reshift my focus. So bright and full of color, the islands radiate and sense of joy, and pure happiness. So much of the Caribbean is vacation spots, and their beauty and unique personalities lure the photographer in you to use the vibrant display for photographs. How can I deny that it always leaves a vivid memory to take home with me? I truly enjoy the colorful scenery.</center>

<center>Walking through a part of town, looking for a particular shop, and out of the alley came a troupe of dancers. They were an energetic bunch, and even had young members, only a few years old, already teaching them the steps. A couple of the parents dressed their infants up in the regalia and danced with them in their arms. What a wonderful life!</center>

<center>I went to the fortress that overlooks the island of St. Kitts and it has a feel that is decidedly British, along with the entire island, especially the churches, right down to driving on the left-hand side of the road. Brimstone Hill Fortress is a National Park actually and is a British Fortress from the 17th century. I love the view from the top of the fort, overlooking the island and in a later picture, the Caribbean.</center>

<center>This is not the first time I have been there, it is a pretty little island and I have found the people to be kind and thoughtful, happy and easygoing. I am trying to imagine how it would feel to be a soldier there hundreds of years ago, defending it against intruders. Dressed in a hot woolen uniform, shooting into the darkness. One person asked if they got hot and asked the Captain if they could wear shorts and a light shirt. Not bloody likely. The pictures from the fort were from my last trip there. I wasn't able to download any more pictures tonight, so I pulled these. I could not skip the fort.</center>

<center>The terrain is beautiful! It is a volcanic island, and has tropical forests filled with birds, green monkeys, and all kinds of reptiles...it has 22 mountains that are named (and lots of peaks that aren't) there is one dormant volcano, even a salt lake. Altogether, it is an interesting stop along the way. And beautiful. Did I mention that? I said green monkeys, but, they really are green. I will admit that most are bleached from the sun, but, even then, you can see the greenish tint of color on them. So yes: Green monkeys.</center>

<center>The port is filled with ships, yachts, and all sorts of vessels of pleasure. The dockyards are large and most of the workers need bikes to get around. I have to admit, it was a pretty nice job. They were working here. Hands up for a job like this. All that fun and money too. Who could resist?</center>

<center>We rented a car and toured the island, we won't mention those slightly narrow roads that people walk right down the middle. ending our time there with a few shops to bring back a little something for the cat sitter. The importance of a good sitter cannot be overstated. Plus, I really wanted to go into the shop that had the shark coming right through the building. Oh so touristy, right? It's okay! You only live once. But, look. The waving palm trees with the mountains in the back. So peaceful.</center>

<center>Of course, with an area no larger than 261 km², Saint Kitts and Nevis has a somewhat limited (but not absent!) array of typical sights. It's hardly a setback for visitors to these two small islands though, as they have all the enchanting natural beauty of the Caribbean.</center>

<center>Its strategic location made Saint Kitts a colonial hotspot and a focal point for European nations in their struggle for power over the West Indies islands. The colonial settlers rapidly expanded sugar plantations and imported African slaves, thus laying the foundations for the islands' colorful culture. Festivities, crafts, and other displays of that culture are among the islands' main tourist attractions now, as are the ruins of the many plantations. The Scenic Railway, traveling on the tracks of the old sugar train railway, is a great way to see the best of them. However, nothing makes the islands' history as tangible as the impressive and well-preserved remains of the Brimstone Hill Fortress. It's both a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provides some stunning views over the surrounding area and even some nearby islands. In a workshop on Language Transmission, Language Death and the Caribbean Child (2008), Dr. Rose Davies of the University of the West Indies stated, " When a language dies, the culture dies." She counseled that it is important to pass on native languages to every future generation. The least we can do is to help the children read the language.</center>

The colorful of the design show how beautiful this looks. Well, the way how people do business there is seems like it only to make sure they earn from tourists. But other site, I would probably say it was all what I wish my country to have, for example with the comfortable atmosphere located near the mountains, accessibility and everything surrounding look beautiful and developed just like in the city. **It was always the French!**

The French invasion of Saint Kitts also known as the siege of Brimstone Hill, from 19 January–13 February 1782, was a part of the American Revolutionary War. After landing on Saint Kitts, the French troops of the Marquis de Bouillé stormed and besieged the fortress of Brimstone Hill. After a month of battle, the heavily outnumbered and cut-off British garrison surrendered. The Comte de Grasse, who delivered de Bouillé's troops and supported the siege, was outmaneuvered and deprived of his anchorage by Admiral Samuel Hood. Even though Hood's force was inferior by one-third, de Grasse was beaten off when he attempted to dislodge Hood.[4] Hood's attempts to relieve the ongoing siege were unsuccessful, and the garrison capitulated after one month. Again, the colors are just amazing! I just learned that St. Kitts is one of the places one is allowed to 'buy' citizenship with owning real estate at a certain value. I'm always dreaming of that second passport lol, I think with this one, you'd be tied with the UK I believe, who knows...I can dream anyway haha.

Yes! There are lots of counties that will let you buy your citizenship! Some countries have loosed up and allowed it for financial reasons. They are tied to the UK, but, are independent. Don't we all dream? It is one of the best pastimes. A second passport can be had without buying in another country.  :) They are pretty convenient to have. 

I love home, but I am in no rush to get back.  :) Everything is taken care of and I am joined up with the second half of my siblings.  :) We couldn't all be together at the same time, but, I could.  :)

When my husband and I went there (September 2019), we also ran across the monkey picture people. I'm like you, I don't want to hold a monkey or pay someone to let me hold it.

I always watched from movies showing the colorful side of Caribbean and turns out, it is even more colorful than in movies. Never heard of St. Kitts until today. The fortress — gives me a sense of patriotism, if I expressed correctly. That sense of awe.

Usually, it is the other way around. The movie is better than it really is. I like that what I am showing seems better. I actually think it is too. St. Kitts is the smallest Caribbean nation. I think the island is only 22 miles long and 7 miles wide, or something like that. So, it is no small wonder that you never heard of it.  :)

Monkeys can carry so many diseases, I would rather not risk it. I don't even want to hold them. I can admire them from a distance.  :)

A very colorful post indeed...creating a great atmosphere. One can almost sense that holiday/tourist feeling by just looking at these photos! Those dancers make me think of what we have here in South Africa...in Cape Town to be exact. They are known (in Afrikaans) as the "Kaapse Klopse". They have a whole parade every year on the second day of January. Very colorful and lots of fun and rythm as well!

That fortress is very impressive! I love visiting places like that!

I agree with the dancing being reminiscent of Africa, after all, they did keep quite a few of their traditions and tweaked them along the way. The dancing came directly from Africa, as did most of the people, and not a great part of their history.

The parade is exactly what we were part of, they pulled people in to dance and it was all fun. It was after the New Year, but, it is done for tourists on a regular basis.

It seems that African people have a natural feel for music and rythm...as if they are just born with it. It amazes me when sometimes see some of their little ones around here and they can hardly walk, but when they just hear the sound of music, that little body starts moving...lol!

It's interesting to hear that this was also a parade taking place just after New Year.

Peoples history within our world is so intertwined, always interesting to witness how people settled. 

Partial stories still told from generation to generation, good to see language is being taught keeping the cultural trail intact for future generations.

I agree with the language and the culture. It saddens me to see some of the younger generation stepping over it, eschewing what is their heritage. In the last ten years, I have watched a renewed interest in who they are and where they come from. 

Once upon a time, people were more interested in blending in, and not standing out. I am happy to see that you can hold on to your heritage and be part of the crowd. (who wants to be part of that crowd anyway1?  :) )

Beautiful colors!  I hope you danced along with the troupe? :D  The terrain is indeed wonderful.  The mountains are nice backdrop to those cannons and the colorful shops.  What a fort!  It is UNESCO-worthy indeed.  

What was said about the language is true.  Here in our place, English is now used more than the dialects, especially by the younger generation.  However, there are still those who do use them and every time I do hear them speak in their own dialect, I am relieved.

Of course, I danced!!! I wouldn't have it any other way. It was such an energetic, fun dance troupe. I am always happy to see them infuse their culture into the landscape for visitors. I find it interesting and enlightening. The dance mixes their African roots from centuries ago with a touch of the Creole found in the Caribbean. It is a great way to keep them both alive. 

As far as languages go, you lose what you don't use. Sadly. Thank you for dropping the link.

I know, without internet one isn’t connected. 
And I so noticed, while not having anything, people sooo need it nowadays. 
You can’t just change addresses anymore. Most want you to do it in their Apps. No change via the post or send a quick email… luckily I can now catch up and get everything sorted in our new place 🤓

It’s stunning here 😉 it’s not Massachusettsor New England but I can get used to it. As it is very similar in many ways/places 😎

Market Friday and Hive taking us to places we have never been before. 
Seeing so much color and life here,  I feel like I know where I belong,  everyone wants a peaceful and colorful life ,  just look at the beauty in this location. 
It is truly a must visit for anyone.

Haha! Not monkey fright, but, some of the ones that they use aren't the healthiest, sadly. They don't regulate the animals that are brought out in public like they do in many places. The ones in Africa and Asia are old-world monkeys and the ones in South America and the US are new-world monkeys with different diseases. It was actually quite interesting to read up on it. 

How cool to do some of your little sis's bucket lists! That sounds like fun! You are such a good sister to all of your siblings. God bless you, truly. You deserve all things good in life. May God Bless you always.

All of the islands are so interesting in their own way, aren't they? It was fun to spend an extended time here in the Caribbean and South America. Life has slowed down, allowing me to enjoy life a little bit more. It pays to dial it down, doesn't it?

I am still away on the original travel, the only thing changing are my siblings. It is a very energetic dance and combines African culture with the Creole heritage of the Caribbean. I have to say that I quite enjoyed it.  :)

I am not a fan of monkeys. You won't see me holding one. They are very naughty. 

You have a good memory. I do love the fortress and I go there and discover different parts of it each time. I have found I enjoy it more when I can focua on one or two parts. Of course, the first time, I saw it all, but, go back and spend more time individually. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your link. Your words are always so kind and thoughtful.
