Well spring is finally here with the first frog spawn of the year in the micro pond. I wasn't expecting to see any as the weather has been bad and we are expecting more snow this weekend. But hey! who am I to argue with our amphibious friends. Animals and birds seem to have a better handle on the weather than us humans.

As a kid this time of year was always great, looking for the first frog spawn. Or even frog hunting at the local ponds. I always found it a bit weird that the frogs paired up and locked themselves together. Your not really into the reproduction side of things when your 9 or 10 years old. 
It always fascinated me that frog spawn and toad spawn was different. The frog spawn appeared in great masses floating near the surface . While the toad spawn was in long strands wrapped around the under water plants.

I remember tadpole hunting later in early summer. Some years there were thousands of tadpoles and some years there were a lot less. Usually depending if we'd had a mild or hard spring.

Sometimes I wish I was a kid again :-)
