## Navigating the High Cost of Living in My Country

Living in Nigeria today is like constantly fighting against the tide of rising prices. We've watched helplessly as inflation takes away from our income while the prices of basic necessities have continued to rise. After much time, I have learned practical ways to help protect my family's financial health. 

The dollarization of our economy has changed how Nigerians engage in daily life. It's more than average earning; it is about how much you can stretch your naira notes to take care of your family. 

As a father and husband, I have had to fully reimagine how we manage our household expenses. The reality is grim - rarely do salaries increase but prices keep increasing. Instead of being miserable, I decided to make life changes that I find practical. 

Haircuts were one area taking a big bite out of our monthly budget. As with barbershops, the average cost for haircuts is usually $1 to $2 per cut. Given that there are four people in my family, I would spend between $8 or $16 monthly. I bought a $12 clipper and learned to cut hair. That basic change alone would save my family roughly $192 a year. I can use that money towards other needs.

Clean drinking water is a luxury in many regions of Nigeria and the prices of bottled water have skyrocketed. We had gotten used to using two bags of sachet water a day at nearly half a dollar each. I made ourselves a home water purification system using a set of 55 gallon drums, chloride and proper filtration. We now store our treatment water in clean containers in the refrigerator and we only have to buy sachets occasionally and saves us a lot of money each month.
 
I wash my own clothes, much to the surprise of many given my profession and my need to maintain a professional appearance. I stopped using cleaning services that charge around a dollar per item. I have special care for my suits and traditional clothing, and occasionally, my wife helps me with the rest, but I am moving towards washing my own. The potential savings are very significant. 
 
I completely overhauled my eating habits. I quit eating out altogether. I now have a proper breakfast at home before going out for business, and usually do not eat again until evening. I have cut out every snack, I do not drink soda or beer. All of my meals are home cooked. In the long run, this helps to improve our health and save money. 

To successfully run a household presently in Nigeria, making money is no longer sufficient; now, it is about planning your strategy and addressing real problems effectively. Every naira you save on some unnecessary expenditure today is a naira that can be used for a necessity tomorrow. As the head of my household, I know that failing to plan is to plan to fail.


These measures may not work for everyone. The goal should be to locate areas of your specific household expenditure that you can save money. It could be monthly subscription service you hardly ever use, or it could be trying to find alternatives to daily activities that you spend money on that can be expensive.


Inflation should not mean your family have to suffer. By being mindful of your spending choices, and giving things up in little portions, you can improve your household financial wellbeing. Sometimes what seems to be a small choice ends up being thousands in savings, which provides greater quality of life and helps buffer the very challenging economic conditions we may find ourselves contending with. 


Establishing your own household financial wellbeing is in your control and begins with changing your financial behaviours or habits in a positive way. These methods worked well for my family and can work for yours. While these days we may focus more on how much we make, the wellbeing of our families depend more on a critical question that based on the fact of managing our resources, how much do we actually have.
