## Nostalgia of living abroad [ENG]
Those who have worked abroad and have returned have experienced a great opportunity. In all senses, and whatever it was, the memories and the experience gained will remain.

**The expatriate** is normally that *worker who is assigned for a certain time to another country*, although it is a concept that is changing over time. If before we only associated it with that person in the company with a certain level who was sent away in exchange for a good salary and other associated extra benefits, such as a great house or a good school for the children. But currently, anyone can be an expatriate, it is not necessary that they send you but we can also go on our own to live abroad without having that status that was previously expected.

In any case, a season working outside our country, any offer that they make us or we find before arriving or in the destination itself, for whatever salary, will mean a new **opportunity to acquire new qualities and skills, and a different experience. It will be a challenge**, surely at the beginning there will be a lot of nerves and illusions, it is a new vital and professional project, and that requires a lot of preparation.

**And finally we leave, and we are aware that all beginnings are hard**, because adaptation in any condition is complicated, and normally the new environment will demand the understanding of a different culture, and possibly other habits.

All this can lead to two ways of **facing the period abroad**: in a positive way with some *integration*, not necessarily with locals, it is also possible to be part of a solid community of people in a similar situation, it is good to have support. In other cases, maladjustment can lead to *isolation*, boredom and frustration, and that will basically cause some to focus solely on the work they have gone to do waiting for the time to return or until they find the opportunity to leave as soon as possible.

In all situations, there will be good and bad moments, being in another country will have its advantages and disadvantages. As always, balance must be made. **But what happens when you return to the origin?**

The return. It is a critical moment both for those who were looking forward to returning and for those who were enjoying that period in a distant place but who are realistic that after their mission, the bubble bursts, other things await them at home or perhaps in a new place. What will be common is that **everyone returns with a different look, the world is seen from another perspective**, and even day to day.

At the beginning, **a time of readjustment is needed**, the time of positive and negative comparisons comes: *"the desire I had to..."* or on the contrary, "*this did not happen there"*. And it is already known that for those around you these appreciations will sometimes be difficult to understand, it is the phase of **misunderstanding and also of rediscovering your routine**, the old one or a new one, because, let's face it, we have changed.

With this routine, with the new normality, the expatriate past will be left behind in a nebula, to which you will only return in search of those anecdotes or those flashbacks that your brain automatically associates with something that happens.

In the end, as they say, time heals everything, **we keep what we have learned, it is our experience, what is most valuable**. The nebula erases those tense moments, of impotence, of frustration or loneliness; only the curious experiences, the discoveries, the known people, and understanding surprising things, is what we have left.

Staying with the good part, because in one way or another, there is always it, in fact sometimes it is so big, so important, that we want to recover it, we need it here. **We want each of our days to have something exciting again**, to know that we will learn something interesting or that we will notice other streets, we will do something that we did not do before, we will try unknown things and we will understand what recently seemed impossible.

For some, feeling outside in a strange environment that you win little by little, fighting every day, is the way to really live, because you manage to make it yours. Because **being far away you understand the world and you understand yourself better**, and that world teaches you more and more every day.

Oh, **all that nostalgia**, sometimes it's very strong, it becomes stronger as that vital experience is further and further away from your daily life but not from your memory. It is a feeling that for some, even if they return, it never leaves them, and perhaps that nostalgia can sooner or later become a need, a constant impulse inside that, sometimes, **keeps pushing you to return to live abroad, maybe someday**.

## Nostalgia di vivere all'estero [ITA]
Coloro che hanno lavorato all'estero e sono tornati hanno vissuto una grande opportunità. In tutti i sensi, e qualunque fosse, la memoria e l'esperienza maturata rimarranno.

**L'espatriato** è normalmente quel *lavoratore che viene assegnato per un certo tempo in un altro paese, anche se è un concetto che sta cambiando nel tempo*. Se prima lo associavamo solo a quella persona in azienda con un certo livello che veniva mandata via in cambio di un buon stipendio e di altri benefici extra associati, come una grande casa o una buona scuola per i bambini. Ma attualmente chiunque può essere un espatriato, non è necessario che ti mandi ma possiamo anche andare da soli a vivere all'estero senza avere quello status che prima ci si aspettava.

In ogni caso, una stagione di lavoro fuori dal nostro Paese, qualsiasi offerta che ci fanno o troviamo prima di arrivare o nella destinazione stessa, per qualsiasi stipendio, significherà **una nuova opportunità per acquisire nuove qualità e competenze, e un'esperienza diversa**. Sarà una sfida, sicuramente all'inizio ci saranno molti nervi e illusioni, è un nuovo progetto vitale e professionale, e che richiede molta preparazione.

**E finalmente ce ne andiamo, e siamo consapevoli che tutti gli inizi sono difficili**, perché l'adattamento in qualsiasi condizione è complicato e normalmente il nuovo ambiente richiederà la comprensione di una cultura diversa, e possibilmente di altre abitudini.

Tutto questo può portare a **due modi di affrontare il periodo all'estero**: in modo positivo con una certa *integrazione*, non necessariamente con gente del posto, è anche possibile far parte di una solida comunità di persone che si trovano in una situazione simile, è bene avere un sostegno . In altri casi, il disadattamento può portare all'*isolamento*, alla noia e alla frustrazione, e questo fondamentalmente farà sì che alcuni si concentrino esclusivamente sul lavoro che hanno svolto in attesa del momento del ritorno o finché non trovano l'opportunità di partire il prima possibile.

In tutte le situazioni ci saranno momenti belli e brutti, essere in un altro paese avrà i suoi vantaggi e svantaggi. Come sempre, l'equilibrio deve essere fatto. **Ma cosa succede quando si torna all'origine?**

*Il ritorno*. È un momento critico sia per coloro che non vedevano l'ora di tornare, sia per coloro che si stavano godendo quel periodo in un luogo lontano ma che sono realisti che dopo la loro missione, la bolla scoppia, altre cose lo aspettano a casa o forse in una nuova luogo. Ciò che sarà comune è che **tutti torneranno con uno sguardo diverso, il mondo è visto da un'altra prospettiva e anche giorno per giorno**.

All'inizio ci vuole un tempo di riadattamento****, arriva il tempo di confronti positivi e negativi: *"il desiderio che avevo di..."* o, al contrario, *"questo non è successo lì"*. Ed è già noto che per chi ti circonda questi apprezzamenti a volte sarà difficile da capire, è la fase dell'**incomprensione e anche del riscoprire la tua routine**, quella vecchia o quella nuova, perché, ammettiamolo, siamo cambiati.

Con questa routine, con la nuova normalità, il passato di espatriato sarà lasciato in una nebulosa, a cui tornerai solo alla ricerca di quegli aneddoti o quei flashback che il tuo cervello associa automaticamente a qualcosa che accade.

Alla fine, come si suol dire, il tempo guarisce tutto, **conserviamo ciò che abbiamo imparato, è la nostra esperienza, ciò che è più prezioso**. La nebulosa cancella quei momenti di tensione, di impotenza, di frustrazione o di solitudine; solo le esperienze curiose, le scoperte, le persone conosciute e la comprensione di cose sorprendenti, è ciò che ci resta.

Restare con la parte buona, perché in un modo o nell'altro c'è sempre, anzi a volte è così grande, così importante, che vogliamo recuperarla, ne abbiamo bisogno qui. **Vogliamo che ogni nostra giornata abbia di nuovo qualcosa di eccitante**, per sapere che impareremo qualcosa di interessante o che noteremo altre strade, faremo qualcosa che non abbiamo fatto prima, proveremo cose sconosciute e capiremo cosa di recente sembrava impossibile.

Per alcuni sentirsi fuori in un ambiente strano che si vince a poco a poco, lottando ogni giorno, è il modo di vivere davvero, perché riesci a farlo tuo. Perché **stando lontano capisci il mondo e capisci meglio te stesso**, e quel mondo ti insegna sempre di più ogni giorno.

Oh, **tutta quella nostalgia**, a volte è molto forte, diventa più forte man mano che quell'esperienza vitale è sempre più lontana dalla tua vita quotidiana ma non dalla tua memoria. È una sensazione che per alcuni, anche se ritornano, non li abbandona mai, e forse quella nostalgia può prima o poi diventare un bisogno, un impulso costante dentro che, a volte, **continua a spingerti a tornare a vivere all'estero, magari un giorno**.
