Visiting Comillas: the Gate of the Birds and a special house

Hello arch lovers!

We return to this beautiful town in the north of Spain called **Comillas** again after having visited its streets, with so many houses from different eras and styles and of course its unique and iconic cemetery, quiet and sculptural. But we have been missing **an unmissable point for those of us who enjoy architecture and that will also surprise us**. Walking around those streets, at a certain moment after having traveled almost everything on a gray holiday day, we went up a street where at that moment there was no one, a total silence. And without knowing, without looking at maps or apps, we continue forward with the sole spirit of seeing what we find, and suddenly, surprise.

A structure that does not seem to fit in with the rest of the panorama, and **a small informative sign tells us** with an arrow to turn right, there again another sign with more information. Although first we stare at **the green vegetation and the tangerines** that happily hang from the trees on a stone wall. But what a wall!

A special wall that ends up being **a gate with a unique design**, but which in turn reminds us of other well-known places. *Do you know Gaudí's Park Güell in Barcelona?* It seems to be done in a similar way, and indeed we read what it says in front of it, and it is **a work by Gaudí**, another one, since in the previous post we already mentioned one of them.

It is called la **"Puerta de los Pájaros"**, in English ***the Gate of the Birds*** (or also *Puerta del Moro, Moro's Gate*), and it is flirtatious as well as harmonious with those sinuous curved lines that seem to integrate well with everything around it without attracting attention, although paradoxically it draws our attention for that **very characteristic modernist style** of the famous architect of the Sagrada Familia as well. A different wall made with small pieces and with various openings, one large, the other medium for people and also **has a curious hole** (I imagine for the birds to play around). And through them if we look as if it were a peephole a door **we discovered a special house**.

I say that it is a special house because it is truly different from others, not only in style but in something else... *doesn't it seem set in an Edgar Allan Poe novel?* It's my opinion and the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it, and especially when I turned around on the other side (it must be a private house because it's closed). And straight ahead on the main part of the street, yes, we look up towards the big windows and we see some **crow figurines**, or something like that. The crows and that decoration, I deduce that something modernist also gives it an almost cinematic or mystery novel touch.

Even the surrounding vegetation seems to accompany it, except for the tangerine trees that we have seen on the side that give it a special joy, near that Gate of the Birds that we have liked so much.

And we also turn our heads towards the other side of the street, and there the views, almost the same ones that should be seen from that curious balcony of the house, **a great panoramic view of the Cantabrian Sea and the beach** of that town of Comillas that so much It has surprised us, almost at every corner.

The architecture of that town is quite commentable, I have always wanted to visit Spain, most of my family lives there. The house of the crows really caught my attention, I feel like a family with the Adams style is going to come out of there hahaha.

The gate of the birds has impressive shape and like as fort shape. The houses inside there has different architectural features. Especially I impressed most with shapes of windows and doors. Absolutely stunning place where you walked.

Thanks this gate is very iconic and we can see clearly the style of the famous creator, and then the house, the unique there like this, so different. It's nice to discover special places when you are walking around a new town.

Sí, Park Güell lo recuerdo bien (Casa Batlló también, sin embargo los lugares al aire libre los encuentro aún más pintorescos): fue lo que más me gustó de Barcelona. Si pudiera, volvería a visitarlo. Si pudiera, visitaría Comillas también/Yes, I remember well Park Güell (I also remember Casa Batlló, in any way I find outdoor places more artistic): it's my favourite building in Barcelona. If I could, I'd visit again. If I could, I'd visit also Comillas.

¡Hola! Sí creo que la arquitectura al aire libre donde crea armonía con el entorno es lo más reconocible. Y en Barcelona hay mucho que ver pero me ha parecido curioso encontrar sus obras en esta localidad cántabra, y porque no pude entrar al "Capricho" de Gaudí que parece ser otra obra estupenda pero estaba cerrada ese día 26 de diciembre.

Hello! I do believe that open-air architecture where it creates harmony with the environment is the most recognizable. And in Barcelona there is a lot to see but I found it curious to find his works in this Cantabrian town, and because I could not enter Gaudí's "Capricho" which seems to be another wonderful work but was closed on December 26.

Amazing combination for an architecture experience @duvinca! A wall and a house that simply arouses our curiosity. These silent monuments may seldom be overlooked by passersby, but upon knowing that the wall is a masterpiece by renowned Architect Antonio Gaudi, the entire story changes and becomes more interesting. It's now like stumbling upon a lost treasure, isn't it? 👍😊

Gaudi is recognized for the above quote. So does this principle apply as well to the Gate of the Birds?

Absolutely 💯 that quote is totally accurate and represents his own style. In the information panel I read that Gaudí spent time there close to the beach and from there he observed the birds flying around... So probably he felt inspired 😊

I have been impressed with the shape of the door. Its arched entrances and the oval top for the birds has given me a lot of grace and at the same time it seems to me a very interesting, artistic and well thought out work.  Will the birds know that this upper opening is their entrance door?

On the other hand, while I was reading you I could not remember my favorite poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. Yes, the house may resemble some of his stories, few of which I have read. But the Raven poem every now and then I reread it.

I'm happy you like it, I want to believe that birds are very clever and as there they live free and happy that is also an harmonious place for them and they know they are allowed to pass through 🤗
At least the name is nice, hope motivated for that.
About the poem, yeah it could be exactly that, not any of the novels but that poem, thanks a lot! Really that window decoration (with those ravens) is very peculiar and inspire us this author definitively.
