The gear turned, interlaced with another, and another. His eyes traced the inner workings of the machine to the place where the light shone. Vertical wrinkles appear between the wolf's eyebrows, it gazes around as if searching for where the scream is emanating from. The wolf weakened by the repel stared at the shimmer of light and back to where Maya and her mum stood. Maya had misunderstood his intent, he was trying to save her from a danger, nothing seemed right in this forest, the one who had transformed him into a wolf was planning a bigger evil for Maya. The squinching of machines, the darkness, and the arching of the forest tree wasn't what Maya had built, only him and Maya knew this, only them, the only crime he had committed was leaving  without a goodbye. His howling resounded in the encaged forest each time he tried to communicate this with Maya, he lowered his brows disappointed in what he had become.



"Why are you here?" Maya asked her mom again, her mum was everything but lovely, surprised to have seen her protecting her from a wolf was rather strange. She was the reason why she had come to the forest and why she had earlier wanted to jump from the cliff.


"You know why," she repeated. Maybe she was here to finish what she started and the only way was to buy her trust, Maya thought. 


"There's no one here with us. Just the two of us"  Maya's younger self whispered to her ears.


"Mom is here with us" Maya retort, but again the tiny voice whispered "There's no one here with us. Just the two of us". Maya turned in the direction where her mom stood but no one was there, fear gripped her as thick darkness enveloped the part of the forest where she stood. She heard the loud angry screaming again but this time so close to her, her knees became weakened, standing beside her was a ghost of her mum. She stood there motionless, stuck in the position with no life left inside of her.

"I've waited for this moment all my life, a moment when you would go extinct. You've helped me kill your dad, the wolf, I knew the voice sounded so familiar but he had come as a wolf while I was there in sheep clothing" Maya's mom said laughing instinctively.  Memories started to flash through Maya's mind, yes, now she remembered, she had been here before, the wolf, the light, the forest, her younger self, except, she paused, Eureka! the devil, that was her mum. She tried to withdraw herself from the beast standing before her but her legs couldn't carry her

"You can't escape from me" her mom who was now transformed said, piercing her long nails into her skin.  "It's no longer your happy forest, the same forest you've built with your dad will become your doom" she added. She picked up a metal that looks like a machine with gears and sharp edges and walked gently toward her humming. The machine squinched with the scream like that she heard in the forest, it was her mum all along. Suddenly the wolf dashed at Maya's mom, throwing her off balance. 

"Run" it said to Maya. She seemed to understand him now, she could see the pain in his eyes,  "run" he said again growling. Maya ran sobbing loudly in the woods. She had reached a far distance when she stopped, "it was her forest, she had created it, again she could bring back the colorful and beautiful sound that was in it" she said boldly wiping off her tears.


Maya's mom and the wolf's clashing could be heard in the woods throwing down trees and ripping off the green plants. Maya sneaked behind the trees while lurking her devilish mom, she stabbed her from behind using the metal that lay on the floor. She screamed and vanished into thin air, "I'll return" her voice echoed among the trees.  The wolf lay helplessly on the floor beaten by the magic from Maya's Mom, "rebuild this forest" he said to Maya who held him passionately lying in his pool of blood.
