Art was imitation of nature because the world itself is an art work by the creator, but in the 19th century, photography took over that function, and in the 20th, abstract art overturned the whole notion of what art is about, in the 20th century it was said that art was about representation. And although art meant skill early on, conceptual artists elevated ideas over execution. So what is art? Does it have to be beautiful? Expressive? Original? Uplifting? Intellectual? 

**"What is art?"**

Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

This is a simple definition of art. 
Does art have to be beautiful??  O yes it does have to be beautiful, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, before any art work is bought or looked at,  Beauty attracts, colour combinations and designs really matters.

Does art have to be Expressive?? O yes it as to be, every artist have a story behind his paintings which brings out expressions. Art work needs to be expressive. 

Original and uplifting is another major key in art work.
