Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about a ceramics festival in Kyoto. It is actually the second biggest pottery festival in Kyoto, so I would like to talk a bit more about it.

As I mentioned above, Kyomizu-yaki no Sato Matsuri is the second largest pottery festival in Kyoto, just after the one in Gojo-zaka. It is focusing on the famous Kyoto-style pottery called Kyomizu-yaki, or Kyo-yaki for short.
The name comes from one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Japan: the Kyomizu-dera. It is also one of the most visited temples in Japan, and if you have ever been to Kyoto, it was probably on your "must-see" list! 
I would like to add a small personal comment about Kyomizu-dera, if you want to rent a kimono and take nice pictures it might be interesting. Otherwise, it is not very enjoyable as it is simply overcrowded. You do not feel the Zen atmosphere of temples, and you are constantly stopped by people taking pictures everywhere. The place is nice, but there is a strange mix of people praying and others eating ice cream, side by side.

So, what is the link between the Kyomizu temple and the Kyoto ceramics style? Well, it simply happens that potters used to have their workshops in the area around the temple. Therefore, the name of this style took the name of the temple.
However, it is important to understand that Kyoto was for a very long time the capital of arts in Japan. The best artists and artisans from all over the country came there to open a workshop. The competition was ruthless. Indeed, famous artists could receive commands directly from the Imperial family and its court! As a result, a lot of different styles were brought to Kyoto, in the hope to be noticed by influential people. This legacy is still visible in the diversity of pottery styles available in Kyoto: fine golden porcelain, crude pottery with a rustic glaze, and everything in between!

At this festival, you will have the chance to meet famous artists from Kyoto (Master Saito Unraku !), but also many potters from other regions. Usually from potters that came to study in Kyoto but built their workshops elsewhere. Thus, it is possible to see and buy incredible pieces not available anywhere else, and at an excellent price!
One aspect of this Matsuri I appreciate very much is that there is a bit of everything in any price range. If you want dishes for everyday use, no problem! There is plenty of rice bowls, soup bowls, and plates available for less than 5 USD. You are looking for an expensive Matcha bowl for a special ceremony? You also have bowls made by renowned masters available! There are even some strange modern art pieces available if you are interested!

Il y a quelques semaines, j'ai écrit un post sur un festival de céramique à Kyoto. Il s'agit en fait du deuxième plus grand festival de poterie de Kyoto, j'aimerais donc en parler un peu plus.

Comme je l'ai mentionné ci-dessus, le Kyomizu-yaki no Sato Matsuri est le deuxième plus grand festival de poterie de Kyoto, juste après celui de Gojo-zaka. Il se concentre sur la célèbre poterie de Kyoto appelée Kyomizu-yaki, ou Kyo-yaki en abrégé.
Ce nom vient de l'un des temples bouddhistes les plus célèbres du Japon : le Kyomizu-dera. C'est aussi l'un des temples les plus visités du Japon, et si vous avez déjà été à Kyoto, il figurait probablement sur votre liste de choses à voir absolument ! 
Je voudrais ajouter un petit commentaire personnel sur le Kyomizu-dera. Si vous voulez louer un kimono et prendre de belles photos, cela peut être intéressant, sinon, passez votre chemin car c'est tout simplement surpeuplé. On ne ressent pas l'atmosphère Zen des temples, et on est constamment bloqué par des gens prenant des selfies. L'endroit est agréable, mais il y a un étrange mélange, entre les pèlerins venus prier et les touristes qui se baladent en mangeant des glaces.

Alors, quel est le lien entre le temple Kyomizu et le style de céramique de Kyoto ? Eh bien, il se trouve que historiquement, les potiers avaient leurs ateliers dans les environs du temple. Par conséquent, le nom de ce style a pris le nom du temple.
Cependant, il est important de comprendre que Kyoto a été pendant très longtemps la capitale des arts au Japon. Les meilleurs artistes et artisans de tout le pays venaient y ouvrir un atelier. La concurrence était impitoyable. En effet, les artistes célèbres pouvaient recevoir des commandes directement de la famille impériale et de sa cour ! En conséquence, de nombreux styles différents ont été apportés à Kyoto, dans l'espoir d'être remarqués par des personnes influentes. Cet héritage est encore visible dans la diversité des styles de poterie disponibles à Kyoto : porcelaine fine avec des dorures à l'or fin, poterie brute avec un glaçage rustique, et tout ce qui se trouve entre les deux !

Au cours de ce festival, vous pouvez rencontrer des artistes célèbres de Kyoto (Maître Saito Unraku !), mais aussi de nombreux potiers d'autres régions. Il s'agit généralement de potiers qui sont venus étudier à Kyoto mais qui se sont établis ailleurs par la suite. Ainsi, il est possible de voir et d'acheter des pièces incroyables que l'on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs, et à un excellent prix !
Un aspect de ce Matsuri que j'apprécie beaucoup est qu'il y a un peu de tout et dans toutes les gammes de prix. Si vous voulez de la vaisselle pour un usage quotidien, pas de problème ! Il y a beaucoup de bols à riz, de bols à soupe et d'assiettes disponibles pour moins de 5 USD. Vous recherchez un bol à Matcha d'exception pour une cérémonie spéciale ? Vous trouverez également des bols fabriqués par des maîtres renommés ! Il y a même d'étranges pièces d'art moderne disponibles si vous êtes intéressé !
