For some time now we have been hearing about the Internet of Things or IoT, a procedure that enables the interconnection of frequently used smart devices through the internet, allowing the exchange of data autonomously through cyberspace.

There is no doubt that disruptive technologies such as IOT and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are a reality that is already part of the digital transformation of society, and will surely continue to evolve to provide us with innovative products that are increasingly focused on meeting the changing and demanding needs of the modern world.

In this sense, the Internet of Things is a technology that is becoming increasingly fashionable in "smart homes", which operate with systems that constantly send, receive and process data. For example, a smart home could predict the right time to turn on the lights or adjust the thermostat before our arrival home, since thanks to the IoT it could connect to the vehicle's GPS and estimate our time of arrival home, or we could also do it ourselves from an application on the cell phone.

But not only that, a city could automate the management of the power grid based on real-time demand or a farmer could automate the irrigation of his crops according to the level of moisture in the soil, so the IoT is one of the technologies that could have the greatest impact on our daily lives.

So it is clear that the scalability and reliability of the Internet of Things faces a big challenge, protecting the data so that the system works properly and ensuring that malicious people attack the system and compromise our security, just imagine the chaos that can cause an attack on a water purification plant that works autonomously or manipulation of traffic lights in a smart city.

So if it's going to be part of our daily lives, the IoT must be secure. And it is not unreasonable to think that this problem can be addressed with Blockchain technology, since every command given to a device would be traceable, the security of the data verifiable and the encryption ensures that we can trust smart devices even if they are connected to the network at all times.

## Blockchain technology to make the Internet of Things secure

Usually people associate Blockchain technology only with cryptocurrencies, but the truth is that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and this technology is not limited only to that use, but has many other applications at public and industrial level thanks to the unalterable transmission of information resulting from encryption algorithms.

And IoT and Blockchain can complement each other through some common characteristics: both technologies are distributed systems, basically autonomous and decentralized. Thus, IoT can benefit from cryptographic tools to increase the security of data transmission.

The main advantage of Blockchain technology is its level of decentralization and the ability to store a copy of all the information of the network in each node, through the so-called "Distributed Ledger Technology", which provides great resilience to the network, surviving the attack of a part of it and ensuring the unalterable record of the information. 

Thus, through Blockchain technology, the encryption of operations between devices connected through an IoT network is obtained, thus certifying the transfer of data and maintaining an unalterable record of the history of the connected devices, providing greater privacy and guaranteeing data integrity.

On the other hand, it will allow greater scalability and traceability of the IoT, since by not depending on a central server, the network resources can be shared among the nodes that integrate it, admitting a greater number of connected devices and improving network performance. 

Therefore, we can say that Blockchain technology will be indispensable for the IoT, in order to have a reliable authentication between devices and a secure data transfer between the nodes that integrate the network, thus minimizing the risks of attacks that affect the reliability of the systems.
