<div class="text-justify"><p>Have you ever had to verify that you are not a robot on the Internet? The process can be as simple as it is hateful. To perform some tasks with your browser sometimes you are forced to prove that you are human by transcribing numbers of street photos or scanned words.
</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>What many users are unaware of is that this a priori security system also serves to work for Google's needs without charging a single euro. With this system, the Alphabet company is able to generate a great deal of valuable information to identify streets and numbers on their maps, digitize illegible physical books for their robots or improve their artificial intelligence systems. The company already faced a labor demand for this in 2015.</p></div>

# The reCAPTCHA system

<div class="text-justify"><p>Since the project to create Street View began in 2007, the Alphabet company has had millions and millions of street and road photos from almost every city in the world in its database. However, it was very complicated - even for Google - to analyze and classify all the information contained in these photos, making the information useless and difficult to process.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>The solution came in 2009 when Google bought CAPTCHA, a challenge-response system designed to identify when we're in front of a robot to prevent SPAM and improve security. This is twofold: they allow the user to navigate safely and, in turn, allow all users to participate in the improvement of their products.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>It's no secret. They themselves recognize that reCAPTCHA is a good way to digitize especially illegible books and identify numbers and streets on their maps, as they say on their website:"reCAPTCHA makes positive use of human effort by channeling the time spent resolving CAPTCHAs to digitize text, annotate images and build machine learning datasets. This in turn helps preserve the books, improve the maps and solve the hard problems of AI.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>While the system has been updated by adding the "I'm not a robot" checkbox to simplify the process, Google still uses the challenges asked if it's not clear if you are a bot and if you have limited browser cookies.</p></div>

# Demand for unpaid work

<div class="text-justify"><p>Google's optimistic vision is not shared by everyone. This is understandable considering that their maps are absolute market leaders and the company makes a lot of money for it.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>In the United States, a class action lawsuit was filed in this regard, alleging that Google used the reCAPTCHA system for the sole purpose of improving its products without paying workers.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>In the letter, the US citizen complained that she had not received any compensation when she was forced to solve two puzzles before opening her Gmail account. He wanted to know why there were two and not one question, and accused the company of using the second question with the sole intention of "transcribing information for the google company without having to pay any humans to determine the correct transcription.</p></div>

<div class="text-justify"><p>Google also received strong criticism for the incapacities of some collectives, such as disabled people, to solve the challenges. </p></div>
