### The Invinctus of Droida

Once upon a time, the much vaunted, universally known and in many places feared Invinctus of Droida met his besieger.

As in the rest of the Universe, there is nothing that cannot be conquered.

Thus each has yet found his master, and once strong, fair and dare, even the strongest, fairest and darest must take his humble hat. But of course, now all the tension is gone, dear listeners, you complain about this? Don't. Watch out and tighten the harness again, there is no need to condemn the day before the evening.

### The indomitable was indeed bored to death,
or would very much like to be now, if Boredom had done him the favour of actually killing him. But the latter only looked at him languidly, eyes half-opened, from the pompous couch:
"Vinctus, what's up? Are you without a real task? Come here to me and sleep. It's the best way to pass these dreadfully dull hours anyway."

At this she yawned and Vinctus already felt heavy and sluggishly looking at those crescent moons. With a shrug he then went to her - surrendered. Sleep came quickly.

But early in the morning Vinctus was awake and fresh and rested, and life merely sprouted from him. Swiftly, he skipped Boredom before she could wake up and headed for the centre of conscience and questioning - ignoring in the back of his mind the thought of why she was actually such a frequent visitor lately:

### Who would be his opponent today?
Who would he mess with and who would he teach a lesson? They were all always and always so easy(!) to defeat. All one had to do was know the key pressure points, merely engage with their language, search their fighting techniques and strategies and then use them against them! Some didn't even realise it. They liked to be defeated, it seemed.

Vinctus dressed, of course, in the finest garments tailored for him by those who had also tapped into the bright side of life for themselves and in whose fine arts he had been instructed himself. He loved heavy brooches and mighty rings on several fingers.

Was he someone who took it easy? Certainly not. To keep Boredom from interfering with him, he deliberately went to places and areas that people described as "strictly to be avoided".

### In the last two hundred years, however, to his astonishment,
he had found it increasingly difficult to find such places, indeed, he had to track them down!

He had not fought animals for a long time, they were generally so rarely encountered in the cities that honour forbade him to seize their lives. And after all, he could not set them riddles or persuade them to other mischief, so he only kept company with them when he wanted his peace from people.

### The fellow humans in Droida and elsewhere,
seemed to have been striving for the same thing: to become completely harmless, even all of the same morality, so that it took him ever greater effort and, above all, long journeys to finally find someone worthy to conquer.
The peoples seemed to have passed together through a linguistically prefabricated sluice gate and were terribly quick to take offence at seeing something dirty, foreign, dangerous and disgusting. Dead bodies, rotting organic, sticky, corrosive, they wanted nothing more to do with any of it.

### The pavements; cleaned corridors, swept empty of the refuse of human activity. No clutters, no surprises.
Even the few red light districts looked tidy and changed into wannabe's.

A restlessness took hold of Vinctus, for indeed, he had sometimes spent days looking for places that smelled different from these glossed-up areas of people who used to call themselves modern. And who were immediately offended if you shouted a single crude word at them.

Women no longer acted like women, men no longer acted like men. They pretended as if they could be anything and anyone at any time. If only they would at least do it, and do it risky and colourful! Strangely enough, the more they shouted "difference!", the greyer they became.

Entangled in these terrible daydreams, Vinctus noticed almost too late how the footsteps of Boredom were already approaching, just one more corner and she would have caught up with him again. Just away! "Ciao, Beautiful!" he called and ran.

### This time too he made prey, a haggard looking slasher,
what a catch, so rare in the world, you had to look for them like the proverbial needle in a haystack. But of course, people made a fuss as if they were whole slasher armies. Each single exceptional case of hearing from one, an accident, an unfortunate mixture of circumstances, an illness, and they made either a liability issue or a movie from it. Mistaking exceptions as rules.

The other one fought really hard and gave him a wound or two. With a brutal shove in front of a stone wall, the slasher went down bleeding. Before he breathed his last, almost in wonder and possibly also relieved to be rid of his evil burden at last, he spoke the words, "If only I had known..."

### Not long and it took Vinctus months to seek out a worthy conqueror,
even the artists were not breeding further infants and so, one day, Vinctus realized: He was besieged. Just like that. No trumpets, no fanfares, no nothing.

Not, like he had imagined it. He had thought of a mighty figure, a sky-scraping challenge, a mind wracking task, a really hard end fight. But not this!

He simply got besieged from something worse than Boredom.
### What killed him was the absence of differences.

Sheer disinterest in live. What finished him off was total unity. So he died from a broken heart.

The end? Hardly.
Vinctus was no more, but who cares? He, she or it found a new living space somewhen else.

### The dance begins anew, once upon a time.

I recognize a strong political/cultural theme in this story, and it's one I dwell on quite regularly - we are fast becoming a global society of people who act, dress, and have sex in many different ways, but are required to think and live exactly alike. We are told this will improve society and our lives, by making it more "fair" and by increasing "equality", but in reality it would rob us of individuality and opportunity.

In your story, this force has robbed your character of the essence of his life.

This fabulous story has an unusual theme, is very well crafted, and engaging. Thanks for directing me to it.

Perhaps your character could meet with Boredom in a back alley someday and slit her throat for us all.

Thank you!

I'm very glad you see the intent in the story and that this talk of fairness and equality is merely like icing over a bitter tasting fruit, once you've eaten deeper into it.

You are unfortunately the only one who comments in this way, but with an understanding that comforts me.

I often have trouble writing short stories, but every now and then the muse kisses me and it works.

HaHa, :D that you also want to kill Boredom does her injustice. The literal translation of the word boredom in German is "to have a long while". It is the sister of vigour and resonates with her in a positive relationship of tension, insofar as people move in balance within this space of tension; between energy and rest. If you overdo it with action, you end up in stress. If you overdo it with boredom, you become sleepy and sluggish, so you end up down in the negative field of tension.

Each of these negative states can nevertheless be attributed also a good quality, in the sense that the things that personally occupy a high degree of space in one's life point to something within oneself that should either be soothed (energy lessened) or powered up (infused).

For my part, I need to work more on my aggressive attitude, I suppress these feelings too often.

This is actually a method I learned during my education more than a decade ago. I once wrote about it, I'll give you the link if you are interested. It's called the "square of values". It's, when I recall correctly, an expansion of one of Aristotles approaches.

also who eat, dance, celebrate differently. Even the distances in which a South American and a North American were used to practice between their bodies were different. Paul Watzlawik wrote quite extensively about the cultural differences and the differences between men and women. Now we all should be 1,5 meters apart from each other. It's ridiculous.

We've been headed in this direction for a long time, but I am still surprised by it. Not long ago I was going along with it all. One has to step outside the herd to know they are in a herd. Fair does not mean same. Fair means free. Same means slave.

I think you're saying that, without Boredom, there could not be Tension.

A great read @erh.germany. There is nothing I love more than people who are not afraid to be themselves. And so a quote from my favourite Shakespearian play: β€œThis above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.” Hamlet ([source](https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8646-this-above-all-to-thine-own-self-be-true-and)) If we do not embrace and celebrate our differences, where will we find fire, and heart, and art, and soul? We shall surely all be defeated in life... this is not necessarily death...but it is no life. No tension, no joy. For you can never truly experience any emotion or experience at its deepest level if you have not been touched by its polar opposite. Be bold. Be colourful. Please continue to drop ripostes onto my posts. En garde, my friend! !PIZZA !LUV

I've found that storytelling, as well as all other art forms, is often the more elegant way to weave a message into it that's less door slamming than an argumentative text that tries to state the views I have. A lot more explanation, source citations, and so-called "evidence" want to be integrated. The freedom of the artist, on the other hand, is one that is also appreciated by non-artists, by those who like to have everything proven, substantiated, dissected and analyzed. They, too, are amenable to the indirect path, if they have not cultivated it themselves. Ultimately, we can all be artists, if we allow it. As you confirm, it is the differences, the uniqueness in each of us, that reveal these differences in the first place. Stories have the greatest power when they contain authentic experiences.

Being defeated, in its true sense, I think, is nothing bad, insofar as one finds ones master and welcome him or her to the teachings delivered without hatred. You can smell if someone treats you with hostility or whether this human welcomes the challenge him or herself, right? For the outcome is not certain and that's the lovely thing, I think.

100% my friend. And I totally agree, I can get away with so much more in my stories and relay a lot more meaningful information in a way that is more easily digestible so that others can absorb, sometimes completely passively, and come back to perhaps mulling over some more at a later time. I love using storytelling to invite the reader to join me in exploring some concept, precept, or contentious issue worth bringing to the fore for debate. I did a lot of debating when I was at school in the debating club and also did Moot court in lawschool so I feel that my natural curiosity together with exposure to differing viewpoints, and often being asked in debate to take a position that I did not necessarily agree with, has enabled me to look at the bigger picture more often than not and see things from multiple perspectives. It really helps me now as an author to get into the mindsets of my characters too.
