Consistency Is Key

If there’s any one lesson that can be gleaned from my nearly three decades of haphazardly trying to make a living as a writer it is this, you have to keep showing up to make it. Consistency is truly the key. Think of it as taking advantage of compound interest during the best of your earning years. Time is your greatest friend...if you use it wisely. 
 
A majority of people fail in life only because they lack or lose focus. They lose focus because something newer or shinier catches their attention. Or it can be merely because they get discouraged that their dream isn’t progressing as they hoped it would and lose their motivation. They become deflated when they see others progressing faster than they are. It's easy to do.

Getting discouraged is easy to do if you’re following your passion just because you want to be rich or to gain notoriety. It’s not quite as easy to give up on your dream if you’re actually in love with performing the act(s) involved in helping you to achieve it. 
 
Here’s an example. If you follow my blog you know I bought a new Brompton C:Line bike (a.k.a. my Clown Bike for obvious reasons) back in May. I’ve loved cycling for as long as I can remember but the Brompton has made it so convenient to ride that I’ve consistently ridden more this cycling season than I ever have in my life.

It's not that I've racked up a crazy amount of miles in any one ride. My daily ride never feels like a burden, often it’s the highlight of my entire day. I look forward to it, I feel better, and am way more productive afterwards.

I was astonished when I started adding up my total miles for the season last week. Since May I’ve logged 501.1 miles on the road and just a little bit of effort mostly every day is all it took.

Consistency works with any goal you can imagine. Blogging, entrepreneurship, learning a new skill, even investing and it pays massive dividends eventually. 

Keep showing up. 

Keep doing the work. 

Keep learning as you go and adjusting your approach. 

That's all that is required of you. 

Do this and you’ll automatically be ahead of most of the rest of humanity.

There have been several times that I thought about just walking away from Hive.  It's pretty rare though.  For the most part I enjoy showing up and doing my thing each day.  Even if no one reads it. I used to journal quite a bit when I was younger.  I stopped doing that for a time, but this kind of fills that void I think.

I've had a few close calls with walking away too. Once was in the very beginning, before my posts gained any kind of audience. I shudder at the thought of how different my life would be if I would have done that. 

Writing can be so therapeutic if we stick with it. I never really thought about how similar blogging can be to journaling. I just caught the recent Hot Ones episode on YouTube with Cate Blanchett. She said that when she performs she imagines that no one will ever see her acting and this is how she gets through her fears and embarrassment. Good writing is very similar, I think. We have to forget about the audience and write for ourselves, very much like journaling.

Yeah, really good points!  I'm still not earning what I would have thought after close to five years on here.  I also would have thought I would have more name recognition by now.  I am doing better than most though, so I can't really complain.  I know it will pay off down the road and until then, it's just a good bit of fun and a nice creative outlet!

Hi Eric, your opinion is absolutely correct. Consistent is something absolutely done by someone who wants to succeed in life. Someone who is inconsistent and easily bored, of course, will find it difficult to achieve what he aspires to. Have a nice day, Eric.

I do not think one can overstate this, especially regarding writing. As an academic writer, it is basically the same. Just keep jumping my grandmother always said to me. Consistently roll the boulder up the hill, if I can butcher Albert Camus' Myth of Sisyphus like that. And to use another catchphrase, the best time to start is yesterday. I somehow managed to do just this in my academic career. By just keeping on jumping I impressed my peers enough to let them trust me. And again, the best time to start is yesterday. I am really trying hard not to bring in another sourdough reference, but I guess you already know I am going to bring this up. Bake every day (or as much as you can) to practice and become better. But before I continue too much, let me stop! Stay well, my friend.

I never realized you were an academic writer! How long have you been doing it? You are so right, procrastination is probably the number one killer of dreams. The brain puts forth a million excuses as to why we shouldn't start something. Once you learn to silence that voice a new phase of life begins. Lol, baking sourdough IS a perfect metaphor for succeeding in life (or not) in every way. This last time I baked (my fifth), I noticed I was less uptight about it and just enjoyed the process more. I love to use sourdough baking and fermentation in general as metaphors for our own thinking in life. That is how I started this blog on the other platform in 2016/2017 I think. Time flies so quickly! 

Yes, our brains never want to sit still and do what we want/need to do. I am an avid gardener and when I get myself I got up and about in the garden. 

I am busy with my Ph.D. at the moment! And I publish on and off in some minor journals (at least try to). My work is in a very niche area so there are not a lot of places you can publish your work. But the hope is to end up in the academy. I am (if all happens as planned) giving my first series of lectures next year. 

You are also a writer, poet? That is awesome. I have read some of your work and it is brilliant!

Also bcoz they don't have a better perspective and foresight. Anything that we do must be in the long run, the short-term things are just a subset of the long-run objective.

The main ingredient of foresight is purpose. When you don't have a defined purpose and when you don't keep a reminder of that purpose at frequent intervals or days, then you make a departure from that purpose unknowingly, when you engage and act with your purpose, you go deeper and you have a better foresight, then consistency will come into play.
