Today I was searching for a way to measure the level of activity across different blockchain projects. My search began by looking at what data is readily available and meaningful to compare.

***So what data is available?***

#### Twitter
I already make a weekly report on Fridays with the global Twitter Activity. 
For a social media platform in particular this is very useful to monitor to see how Steem/it is being picked up by existing outlets. Adoption by these platforms and mouthpieces could well be the catalyst for taking Steem to the next level.

#### Reddit
I will be introducing shortly a weekly Reddit analysis that looks at activity across different Crypto Subreddits. 

#### Youtube & Facebook
@paulag already does a great monthly analysis for Youtube traffic. 

#### Github
The last unexplored (by me) and readily available data where we can see activity is Github, and it may well be the most important.

## Github
I first came across Github around 2012 but it began in 2008. I am sure you will have heard about Github and Git but what is it?
Github is a website that allows people to share files, mainly files consisting of computer code. Think of it like dropbox but for computer code. Unlike dropbox you can't save any type of file such as videos and pictures, the files you can share are generally text based files. 

**Version Control**
There is an additional piece of magic not available in Dropbox. The site lets you track changes to files when you save them and also merge changes from different contributors. 

***Why is Github so important?***

GitHub has become the defacto standard location for storing and sharing open source code. The code for Bitcoin, is stored on Github. Anyone can copy it and make changes to their copies but only a select few people can make changes to the master file that is stored on github.com. 

***Steem is on Github...***

Steemit also store the source code for their opensource projects such as Steem and the Steemit Website, called Condenser on github *(I never got the connection with Steem till yesterday for the name)*. 

As I mentioned because there is version control we can see the activity creating and adding code on the site. Who is making changes, which projects are getting the most activity.

## Steemit on Github

Today I am going to give an overview of the activity on the different projects based on Github commits (i.e. updates to the code)

**What is great about looking at Github data is that this is comparable across different open source projects such as EOS, Bitcoin and others. I will perform analysis on those Projects for comparison next week so stay tuned.**

***Repositories...***

A repository (Repo) is like a sub folder on Github. Code is organised into folders and generally there would be a Repo for each of the significant component of the project. The following graph shows how many commits each of the Repos has gotten in the last year.

For further details of any of these projects Luke Stokes provides a nice summary in his post I referred to earlier. 


## > 100 Commits

The next graph looks at the activity over the last year for the Repos that have had > 100 commits.

* Each bar shows how many commits have been made in each month. 
* The most activity is on the blockchain Steem and the website Condenser. 
* We can see there was a lot of activity on the SMT whitepaper up until September last year then it has trailed off. This is a good example where not all activity is captured by looking at Github commits. 


**Does these graphs of Activity provide a good representation of where the team has been focusing their energy?**
