It’s astonishing how often a Hispanic last name invites assumptions—particularly the unfounded belief that I must support illegal immigration from Latin America. This mindset reveals more about the bias of others than it does about my actual beliefs. My surname, like many, traces back to Spain. It’s a reflection of cultural and historical heritage, not a political ideology.

To presume someone's views based on their ethnicity or family name is a form of stereotyping that undermines reasoned discourse. I form my opinions through critical thought, ethical reflection, and informed analysis—not by defaulting to what others expect someone with my background to believe.

This issue highlights a larger problem: the tendency to reduce individuals to categories, using labels instead of listening. When we do that, we silence the complex, nuanced voices within every community. We are not monoliths.

Respecting identity means allowing space for diverse perspectives, even within cultural groups. So yes, I’m proud of my heritage—but that pride doesn’t come with a prescribed political stance. It comes with history, family, and some respect for the rule of law and thoughtful policy.

Let’s choose reason over reflex. Let’s move past assumptions—and start asking questions.
