Survey Of The History And Development Of Mathematic [Archeology of Mathematics]

Mathematic started as soon as humankind started to count on their fingers. This is one of the most important areas of human knowledge. The people of ancient Egypt, China, and Babylon discovered the methods of using mathematics over 5,000 years ago (this is very evident from ancient manuscript, and also from the construction of the pyramid).

Some scholars have also said that the ancient Greek was also an “actor on the scene” in the discovery of mathematics. But some have argued that they developed mathematic by thinking about it.

Also, the Romans played a very major role in the history of mathematics. At least, we’ve heard of the Roman numerals. But more than that; they used mathematic in construction (though they didn’t much develop on the science).

After the fall of Roman Empire, something very remarkable happened in the field of mathematics. The development of mathematics shifted to the Arab league. In 800AD, Algebra was invented by Arab scholars. By 1200AD, Arab mathematics was introduced in European schools. This led to the renaissance of learning in Europe from 1400AD.

After this era, mathematics began to develop progressively. But it is very important to state that there were contributors to the development of mathematics. I’ll just list a few of them: Euclid (developed many theories of geometry), Pythagoras (explanation of the nature of numbers), Archimedes (his invention found the path in calculus).

Branches in the field of mathematics

There are many branches in the field of mathematics. I will just list some of them.

1. Arithmetic

This branch deals with the system of numbers and calculation. This is the most widely used branch of mathematic. We use it in daily. Arithmetic has 4 basic operations, which are: multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

2. Algebra

This branch uses symbols to represent unknown quantities (these symbols include, x, y… etc). The symbols stand for the value of quantities to be found. Algebra has a representation in almost every area of physical sciences.

3. Calculus

This is a kind of algebra which deals with changing quantities. It is mainly applied in the field of engineering and physical sciences.

4. Geometry

This branch deals with lines, angles, planes, and solids. This include: Euclidean geometry (used in architecture, engineering, and navigation), plane geometry (deals with plane figures), solid geometry (deals with three-dimensional figures), trigonometry (deals with angles measurements).

5. Co-ordinate Geometry

This is a combination of geometry and algebra. Algebraic symbols are used to represent figures, lines, or solids.

6. Set theory

This is a branch of algebra that uses symbols to solve mathematical problems in logical reasoning. It also deals on the relationship of a quantity in relation to another.

7. Statistics

This branch deals with counting and numerations. This also deals with the analysis of numeric facts. This includes, but not limited to; Range, Mean, Mode, Standard deviation, etc.

Mathematics is really one of the bedrocks of human knowledge. I love mathematics more than pizza.

Thanks
