Selfishly I gulp
Down the icy air.

My lungs heave
With the burden

Of the unfamiliar
Sting of winter’s breath.

My ears are too
Numb to hear

Anything more than
The frantic pound

Of my heart pushing
The thick blood

To my frail limbs 
Battling against the ice.

Here, in this place
Where extremes meet,

And my sweat freezes
In the morning air,

This is where
I am most alive.
