The Akwa Ibom people are the coastal people in southern Nigeria and one of the stereotypes that people still carry till today about the Akwa Ibom people is that they have a particular or distinctive accent used to identify them.

Not only is it a stereotype that people think, but many comedians have had fun openly about it, many movie directors have acted movie using that to make jest of the Akwa Ibomite and till today, people still talk about it even though it is not true.

Secondly, the "she be Calabar girl stereotype" has stuck in the mind of people over the years. I remember telling someone I am an Akwa Ibomite, and all the person said was, **ha, so you are a Calabar girl?** 

Many people till today who can not differentiate an Akwa Ibomite, or a Cross Riverian from a Calabar person keeps making the mistake of referring to those from Akwa Ibom or Cross River State as a "Calabar Person" but what they fail to understand is that Calabar is the capital of Cross River State and Akwa Ibom is just another state away from Calabar or I would say a neighboring State.

It has stuck over the years with Akwa Ibom and Cross Riverian girls and till today, it is still in the mind of many from the North and West still refer to an Akwa Ibomite or Cross Riverain as a Calabar girl.

Another painful stereotype that is hurting when you tell someone you are from Akwa Ibom State because of their belief that all of us are Calabar, they say that girls from my place are promiscuous. 

That’s why It is always hard for an Akwa Ibomite to tell people where they are from because this particular stereotype is quite hurting and unfortunately, many parents feel this is true most especially if they are Yoruba and their son wants to marry an Akwa Ibom girl, they find it difficult to look beyond the stories of an Akwa Ibom women strafing their brains out.

Another stereotype is that Akwa Ibom men are known as lazy and subservient men, it is also known that they love dog meat, spend all day drinking palm wine instead of working, also spend their time chasing women.

It is also said that generally everyone whose name ends with "obong" or bears a name like Ekaette is a Calabar person. Another Sterotype that is always said about Akwa Ibom girl is that they know how to cook very well. So many men from other states who comes to Akwa Ibom state to marry carry the mindset or believe that if they marry an Akwa Ibom girl, her duty will be to be in the kitchen cooking all varieties of food for him and for the family.

Well, not all stereotype are bad but the ones that are bad actually hurt me to hear people say. Most especially when many comedian make jest of us about the accent which isn't true actually hurt. Passing by and hearing a Yoruba man or Igbo man talk about how Akwa Ibom girls are promiscuous and they believe that are doing us a good when they make advance and expect us to accept without turning them down because of our promiscuous act.
