* Early next year, a tanker vessel owned by Maersk, the Danish transportation conglomerate, and a passenger ship owned by Viking Line will be outfitted with spinning cylinders on their decks. Mounted vertically and up to 10 stories tall, these “rotor sails” could slash fuel consumption up to 10%, saving transportation companies hundreds of thousands of dollars and cutting soot-causing carbon emissions by thousands of tons per trip.
.
Rotor sails rely on a bit of aerodynamics known as the Magnus effect. In the 1850s, German physicist Heinrich Gustav Magnus noticed that when moving through air a spinning object such as a ball experiences a sideways force. The force comes about as follows. If the ball were not spinning, air would stream straight past it, creating a swirling wake that would stretch out directly behind the ball like the tail of a comet. The turning surface of a spinning ball, however, drags some air with it. The rotation deflects the wake so that it comes off the ball at an angle, closer to the side of the ball that’s rotating into the oncoming air. Thanks to Isaac Newton’s third law that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction, the deflected wake pushes the ball in the opposite direction, toward the side of the ball that’s turning away from the oncoming air. Thus, the spinning ball gets a sideways shove.

Inflatable plastic cylinders are cheap. They are sold as _watertoys_ because the float.

Imagine an inflated lighter than air, flettner cylinder ....sail?
Imagine the possibilities.
It'd not _heel_ so much...
it'd definitely float..(in the water)

ok...next question.
The science is settled.
It's a proven concept.
It works.
It's inexpensive to build,
Inexpensive to operate (free with solar).
So what's the problem?
Why is it not in use?

Since drag is far greater in water than air, what would be the result of the Magnus effect in water?

Here's some inspiration:

finger lickin good.
I mean...er.
So what do you think about a vertical, lighter than air, reversible, variable speed magnus effect (flettner) rotor on a boat? Would it adequately serve as a sail as well as providing additional flotation?

or perhaps more than one?

if there are two arranged fore and aft similar to a bermuda rig will the effects be similar to sails?
if there are two arranged side by side similar to a biplane rig....think of the possibillities.

What would happen if they are spun in opposite directions...or at variable speeds?

All questions I want to know the answers to!

I have zero practical experience with sail. The Magnus Effect clearly produces considerable force, as is evident from the model plane video. I expect this effect may be magnified by the increased drag in the more viscous medium of water, and that dual, counter-rotating cylinders starboard and larboard (not floating, but vertically immersed) might well prove sufficient for all propulsive and steering purposes of Steem Dreem.

I dunno. I wanna know. If I can help find out, I'd be happy to contribute - as long as it requires no calculus. I tried to teach myself calculus from texts, but, despite repeated blows of my hammer on the pages, understanding failed to escape from them into my brain.

Indeed, variable speed would seem to provide a mechanism for steering, which is what I envision for the dual rotor Magnus Effect submersible drive. If one could provide enough power to the rotors to support the boat on a hydrofoil, the overall drag on the hull would be reduced such that the rotors would be almost the only source of drag.

I am practically salivating at the prospect of seeing such a mechanism in operation!

Edit: I vaguely recall the 'Calypso', Jacques Cousteau's flagship, was outfitted with such rotors towards the end of Jacque's captaincy, so I am certain this has been done, and does act as sail.
