<p>(Some background)</p>
<p>My best friend had 3 children. &nbsp;Two of them were slightly older than mine, the younger one close in age. &nbsp;It was great to be close to a family where I could witness the ongoing process of an unschooling upbringing--something rare back in those days. &nbsp;I was inspired to see how free and amazing her children were. &nbsp;They were some of the most beautiful, open people I had ever known. &nbsp;</p>
<p>The oldest son, Quinn, &nbsp;was a charismatic teenager who, at the conference, always had an entourage of younger children who examined and copied his every move. &nbsp;I remember my attention being pulled in his direction as he grew up, as I found him to be quite intriguing in his way of being, though no feelings of "attraction" ever crossed my mind, as he was just a kid and I was in a marriage of many years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As we prepared a Thanksgiving feast with our friends in the handmade earth ship style home, Quinn casually mentioning how he’d love to engage in a hot oil massage and how he was hoping someone would take him up on the opportunity to share. &nbsp;Inside of myself I dared to consider his offer and actually visualized how it would be to fall into such an exchange. &nbsp;My imagination didn't go anywhere reality was not, and I was still married (though by this time essentially only on paper), we were on this trip with our families, and I didn’t want to instigate anything, get anyone thinking anything that wasn't, or bite off more than I could chew. &nbsp;I settled for his giving me a standing massage in our friend’s kitchen right in the middle of dinner preparation. &nbsp;I drank in all the energy he lovingly and respectfully massaged into my clothed upper body and was surprisingly completely untouched by any discomfort or judgment by those seeing the exchange between us. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Quinn gave me one of the best massages I had ever had and though I know that a hot oil massage would have been astounding, I was relieved I had not accepted as I felt I was not ready to open myself, however so simple, to be vulnerable to any other man’s touch.<br>

<p>I have always been concerned for the feelings of others. &nbsp;I really disliked rocking the boat, making others uncomfortable, or being a disappointment. &nbsp;I used to care so much what others thought of me that I would unknowingly change my behavior to accommodate and manipulate their feelings about me. &nbsp;</p>
<p>The kitchen massage was a prime opportunity to just close my eyes and enjoy for the sake of full-on enjoyment, regardless of what ideas and comments others would make, even my children. &nbsp;Before I might have passed on the massage to keep from causing any raised eyebrows, but being in Quinn’s energetic field I felt safe.<br>
I felt protected. &nbsp;<br>
I felt loved. &nbsp;<br>
I felt comfort. &nbsp;<br>
I felt deserving, relieved and blessed. &nbsp;</p>
<p>This massage opened a lot of pathways I didn’t even know existed. &nbsp;It was the first of many, many opportunities to feel the discomfort of others and the judgment of myself, yet allowing it to be without interrupting or controlling the process. &nbsp;</p>
<h3>I felt a shift that now I see allowed me to<br>
touch the surface of some very deep seated fears.</h3>
<p><br></p>
<p>Quinn and I did not strike up a relationship through this interaction.<br>
He continued his way and I mine, not looking back or digging into the massage with any meaning other than beginning to realize for myself how generally fearful and stuck I had been, how much I held myself back in general by my own ideas, and some of the detrimental outcomes of being a people pleaser.</p>
