 >”Dad, I was wondering, since you mentioned grandpa’s old rifles, do you have ammo so I could try them out?” ”Is 1000 enough or do I have to go buy more?” Single shot bolt rifle in unexperienced hands, it’ll take me a while to go through over a 1000 .22LR bullets but I’ll bite!  My grandfather from my fathers side, who died before I was born, was an avid competition shooter and apparently really good at it. My dad inherited his guns but the three target shooting rifles haven’t been shot at all after my grandfather died over 30 years ago. I now have the privilage to practise shooting with those guns, which by the way are in pristine condition still.   Along with shooting, my grandpa build target changing thingies so your lazy ass doesn’t have to walk the 50 meters and back to change the target. We still have several different sizes in storage.  I would have been happy with a random piece of styrox board with an X drawn in the middle so I could just get familiar with the gun but no no no that was not an option. First we had to call someone to find targets and drive 40km to get them, then dad made me and brother change tires and move an old car so we could get access to the target changing thingy. Then the thingy needed to be dragged into the field and I set up a ghetto platform to shoot from my brothers garage. I also put up the most important thing to ensure my comfort in the Finnish summer evening, a Thermacell mosquito repellant, 10/10 do recommend. After all day running around and setting things up, I could finally shoot.  I had a choice of Finnish, Russian (USSR back then) and a German gun, and I chose the Finnish one. German one was missing the sights and the Russian had a weird ass trigger that is way too sensitive to start with. The Valmet Leijona Standard felt good in my hands and simple enough to operate. Be on the lookout for the foreign guns for their debut on the blockchain at a later date. ### Question for you gun pros, how the fuck does one get their sights zeroed when you can’t shoot to begin with!? <br> There are so many variables and as a total noobie, I can’t yet be sure what exactly made me miss the bullseye. I did notice everything going right and up and I did get the sights adjusted a bit but I can’t be sure.  I shot a lot and really truly enjoyed it. I was out there alone just shooting for hours on end. I’m not too good yet but this was really my first time when I got to practise at peace and my sights are still a bit out of wack I think. This was my best ten that I ended the evening with and I was pretty pleased to be honest. The shooting was so relaxing and fun that I’m seriously considering on taking the steps to get my own license.  ## I got through about 400 bullets within three or four sessions, to be continued.

It took some serious force to push those bullets in! Lapua and Eley were smooth sailing. I just wanted to use the sticky random bullets and opened backaged first so I can start fresh next time. Apparently these target shooting rifles have a really narrow barrel so even though .22 is .22, there are differences and some don't fit well.

For zeroing with iron sights, if you can't get any groups, try eating a meal. During one of my qualifications with the army, I couldn't zero my weapon because I had too much coffee. After lunch I was able to zero and qualify no problem. Always bring snacks to the range.

I can be somewhat consistent on getting most of the shots in the same sector, they just happen to be off the center 😅 My ”range” is at homehome so the fridge ain’t that far and there is no time pressure, other than having to have dad keep an eye on what I do with the gun since I don’t have a license.

It's good to see the journey a new shooter takes and you're doing a great job. Just on the gun zero-no shooting thing... When I set up a new scope I bore sight it to get it close to the target and it's quite incredible how close one can get the scope in this way. This is often done in the gunshop too if they are mounting the scope but I do it all myself. Bore sighting is done by removing the bolt and looking down the barrel at the target (in my case 100m away) and moving the scope (cross hairs) to the target manually and by eye. It is never *ever* good enough to be called zeroed but will save time and ammunition during the process. *If a scooe is so far away from zero and the rounds are not landing on the target how does one adjust?* There is equipment to help do this, *laser bore sighters*, but I don't use them. I'm an old school dude. With iron sights it's not so easy but is essentially the same process. I hope that helps somewhat. Keep up the good work and who knows sometime soon that man of yours might hook you up with a decent shooter of your own..So, get your license in preparation for the day you knucklehead! 😉

I understood maybe half of that, great. I’ll need to look into it when I’m back at homehome next time. We might change up some things on the guns anyways since there are all sort of parts to go with them. I did ask for a different butt plate(?) already since I found the current one to be really slippery, but I didn’t have time to test out any of them yet. There is a cabinet full of gun related things that I have no idea of what they are. Unless there is a total destruction of the society as we know it, my man better get me girly shit instead of a gun as a Christmas gift 🤣

Half is enough. It's on your radar so that's enough for now. I've been shooting for over 30 years and still learn so you'll never know it all. The thing with shooting and other stuff is that most people *don't know what they don't know*...Until they know. You know? 😁 Butt plate is the right term, yes. A slippery one won't work so well. I use rubber ones with some additional rubber padding however on rimfire rifles they aren't required as there is little to no recoil. Go to the hardware store and gut a roll of that tape with a surface like a sandpaper, the grip stuff. It'll solve the slippery butt plate issue. Lol, yeah he better do that first, buy you some diamonds and high heeled shoes, hand bags and perfume and the guns can come later, although if he was to get you a gun I think you'd be just as happy.

If the scope is off target, I initially move closer until it hits. Then I can adjust it center, and back up; and begin setting it up right. There is also a cheat I have used when I'm saving ammo. I stablize the gun with bags of lead shot for shotgun loading, shoot the target without moving the rifle, and move the crosshairs onto the center of the hole in the target. It is always pretty close.... Develop a breathing timing that gives you time to squeeze the trigger in a methodical fashion. I like to inhale deep, dump half of the breath, then hold half...and squeeze. Black powder has taught me to maintain the sight picture, after the gun goes off. Doing so with modern powder will decrease the size of the group, which surprised me at first. Welcome to shooting, there are a lot of people here that can help you in this journey. You and @galenkp have had a whole conversation in here without me noticing! I need to keep a better eye on what’s happening in my turf 🤓 What is this powder you speak of? Me no understand. It’s interesting to hear everyones different methods and practises on what they think works the best for them. I’m sure it’s gonna take quite a long time to and lots of practise to find what I think works for me. I do hope I get to shoot again soon because it’s definitely something I want to know how to do, you’ll never know when one might need that knowledge.

Moving closer helps for sure. I always bore sight though so my first round goes on the target. There's loads of different ways, same as the breathing. I squeeze the trigger at the natural pause at the exhale of breath when my body is most relaxed and grounded and I never hold a breath when shooting. My shooting process happens like, well, *like breathing*, these days. Thousands of rounds will do that. 😁 It's good to see Eve getting into shooting a little huh? More the merrier.

Practice. I like to exhale, pause, and squeeze the trigger. Become accustomed to the rifle. See where the bullets group. Wait to make adjustments until you are confident in your fundamentals. When all your shots are as small a group as you can achieve when you aim consistently for the bullseye, then worry about adjusting the sights to bring that group the center.

This is much more relevant for pistols but still applies to rifles. Slowly squeeze the trigger, as slow as you can, so that the shot is a surprise. That should isolate any pulling you're doing with the trigger finger.

yes, it's really expensive where I live, ammo is worth more than gold. I have an old Winchester rifle that costs $3 usd for one round. Of course I never shoot it. 22 is the best to shoot for fun because it's relatively cheap.
