I have heard this idea more than once, mainly by Nico (@wehmoen) from @oracle-d but I haven't seen it pitched anywhere.

# Idea pitch: Light accounts for the Steem Blockchain.

-----

Steem is a freemium blockchain. This means that accounts are able to transact *(post, comment, upvote)* on the Steem Blockchain without having to stake any of the currency STEEM. 

They are able to transact because every new account receives some initial RC's (Resource Credits).

Resource credits are what allows a user to transact on the blockchain. 

By staking STEEM you get access to more resource credits but even an account with 0 STEEM gets access to some.

Accounts, therefore, can't be instant and without a cost. If they were, malicious actors could create thousands of accounts and spam the blockchain using those initial resource credits.

Every new Steem account therefor comes with a cost. You either have to buy an account and get instant access to the Steem Blockchain or you have to wait 2-3 weeks until Steemit Inc. can verify that you are most likely a real human.

This understandable yet cumbersome onboarding barrier is preventing applications build on Steem from onboarding users quickly and without friction.

# Solution #1: Light Accounts

Light accounts are accounts that can be instantly created on the Steem Blockchain but they will only be able to Send and Receive STEEM. They can't vote, comment or post.

A light account even though instantly created won't be able to Spam the blockchain until they stake some STEEM *(to get access to RC's)*.

This solution solves the slow onboarding problem instantly.

But a light account does create a new problem. A bad User Experience.

It's great having an instant account but if you can't do anything with it because you first need to stake STEEM to get access to RC's it's not a good first experience.

# Solution #2: Light Accounts + RC's POOLS.

To make sure Light accounts are able to transact on the Steem Blockchain without having to stake STEEM they need access to RC's.

I propose RESOURCE CREDIT POOLS for applications. 

Any application that wants to onboard users through light accounts will need to have access to an RC pool.

Light accounts will be able to tap RC's from this pool to transact on the Steem Blockchain.

In the case of Spam, users can also be denied access to the RC pool by the application or limits can be set.

The RC pool can be in the hands of the App developer themselves by buying and staking STEEM or the RC's can be leased from other STEEM holders from a market.

This will also create another good use case to stake STEEM.

The combination of Light Accounts + RC's POOLS will allow applications to quickly onboard users and also create a good first experience for them because they can transact. 

It's also a scalable solution for Applications. The RC pool can grow with the growth of the application.

Users that have earned enough STEEM and staked it will eventually no longer need the pool because they have enough RC's to support themselves.

Interesting. 

The Steem Ninja guys have done something similar in effect because they gave me some coupon links and I've been on boarding people through those. It's still a one by one process. In some instances the accounts are mostly to hold SUFB tokens from our law suit against the Tech Goliaths.

I have used them too! And the coupons work great. 

But better would be to just send users to 3speak and have them create instant Steem account and the ability to transact.

I also think their UI around choosing a name and then getting a screen full of private keys is about as good as Steem can get... but still the amount of work it takes to impress on people just how important all the keys and the one password are on the next screen is tiring.

Also the naming convention around the recovery password seem to be completely unpredictable. 

I'm trying to think how Steem could be made as easy in the onboard process as just a password and email chosen by the user, perhaps at first with a trusted supplier (like the Steem Ninja guys) holding keys.

As and when users graduate to understanding what this place is a bit better, there should be a way for them to take full ownership of keys and recovery password and then the safety net is gone.

Also I've been experimenting with Steve Gibson's SQRL login authentication system which leaves the website holding NO SECRETS, no password or anything to be hacked. The User is authenticated without username and password but in a secure way. But that system is a long way from widespread adoption.

I just purchased an account for a friend with my credit card and one using PayPal and while it works great they still were skeptical of the process so I think light accounts are a great idea it limits the initial stumbling block and opens us up to the world

They definitely need to figure something out with the new user creation features. If other social media sites can instantly create a new account for you I dont see why Steemit cant figure something out.

Going on year 3 and looking to individuals to come together as volunteers to onboard users... πŸ•΅ I'm over complaining about the ineptitude that has created this situation.. I get it, that something that's never been built before is being erected. I had half a dozen people try to onboard about 8 months ago both here in Malaysia where I live and in India those that could get the page to even load on their mobile device never got a reply email about their account creation.

That waiting period gave them plenty of time to google steem which resulted in opinions ranging from a startup where the users are forced to invest their time and money to create an ecosystem, a scam, a ponzi, a naive utopian vision, reddit with monetization, and basically complete disenfranchisement before even being able to not partake in steem due to a lack of RCs.. So even if they had made it onboard successfully we would still have to deal with abysmal retention rates..

I've been told that I'm a bigshot, a no skin in the game whiner, that I should pay to have an opinion here, and all sorts of various nasty stuff for not being a cheerleader.. To say that my experiences and opinions aren't welcomed is an understatement.. It definitely doesn't pay well, but Id rather by unpopular and honest rather than paid peanuts to shill.

One more crazy idea I have is mobile design first, at this point I can only assume that requires tech capabilities that exist outside of our chain where people with those skills have actual jobs..  I'll stop there I don't like my steem vibes either..

Interesting idea, I keep claiming accounts because I don't want my RCs to go to waste.  It would be nice if I had the ability to just place my RCs into a pool in support of account creation and apps, and maybe even earn some return for doing so.  It would also be nice if I could transmit accounts I have already claimed to organizations that need them.

You can do it on https://steemworld.org (scroll to the bottom).  You can either do it with your own RCs or pay 3 steem.  If I recall correctly, I was into dolphin before I could claim my first one, but I had claimed a few by paying as well.

**You'd create a 2-Classes Society**
What's the difference between no account and a light account then? It's not like you need to Log-In to read anything on the Steem Sites? Every Light Account would just screw off one potential Steemian, that would have stayed - if he or she would have been given a fair chance of participation. We can't treat newbies like that, it's disrespectful. Better let them wait and give the biggest possible SP Delegation to every new account.

It's a good idea but this is what is going to be developed by steemit, inc now: 
1-SMTs
2-Communities
3-RC delegations (just a guess)
4-and now only light accounts can come in.

This will take too much time. Conclusion: use the SPS to create RC delegation, removing some work from Steemit, Inc and accelerating the process. Talk to @wehmoen , tell him to gather a couple of good devs, like @aggroed and @yabapmatt did for steem engine and keychain. 

He could make a proposal for the SPS and develop RC delegations.

This is one good way to solve the problem and the creation of RC pools is in the roadmap I believe. It'll take some time before they are implemented, though, because they are a feature of the core blockchain. It'll cost money to design, implement and test that feature and there is no way for a third party doing that to monetize it. This is why it will fall on Steemit, Inc to do it at some point.

With my own Steem Account, I can claim around 50 account tokens a week. 

If we want to onboard millions I don't think RC claimed accounts will be fast enough.

A project like APPICS will need an insane amount of STEEMPOWER to claim enough accounts.

With an instant light account and some RC delegation from the 'APPICS RC pool', I think the onboarding process for new members can be way smoother, faster and cheaper.

Users will be able to comment and post photos without having to invest in STEEMPOWER from the get-go.

Also, the app will keep their voting SP instead of delegating it to members. So they can use their SP however they see fit.

or if they don't have the money to buy the SP needed they can rent some from an RC leasing market to fill the pool.

*EDIT*

I guess this also puts more responsibility on the shoulders of the app when it comes to spam. If the delegated RC's are used for spam by light accounts with no STEEMPOWER they will hurt themselves if they don't fight it because this behavior will drain their own pool.

RC claimed accounts will definitely not be fast enough for mass adoption.

But I don't think your RC pool management approach will be either. And that is simply because in order to use the RC pools to allow those new users to do anything besides transact, the RCs will have to apportioned to those users like they are now. So the end result is the same.

The whole RC approach is flawed in my opinion. It's an attempt to create costs to throttle spam without having to impose actual costs like gas fees by imposing a synthetic derivative currency.

In my opinion, what would be a better system would be to two-fold: one, instead of RCs just use voting power and two, create actual markets for actions instead of an algorithm that adjusts prices like a communist's wet dream.

Your proposed system, yeah it make sense and addressing the problem we could all experience if we let them use without binding it with RC system. But whatever STEEM account on this chain might keep SP instead of Light Accounts! Coz we wanna bring that demand, after @ned power down STEEM and we all are experiencing how things went based on STEEM pricing with that incident! So I prefer more Stake and less liquidity, it can be archive by normal STEEM accounts than those options!

**100% Right**, you speak about the real problem here! It's not the ppl who want to join, can't make it in and w8 in 10.000th at the *Doors-Of-Steem-Exile!*

I don't have the numbers, but I bet 90% of the newbies die in the first 1-2weeks of access again. Because you can't do anything with a small account - literally nothing. ~1Post, 2 Comments, 2-3Likes - in the case u don't run instantly out of RC while playing a Blockchain Game. **That is what makes the entry super toxic, nothing else.**

Lmao I posted about this same topic yesterday and just read your post tonight. I agree RCs will play a huge role when we can delegate them. Also, with a simple light account dapp devs can build second layer solutions ontop of those light accounts like we did at 3speak.
