Steem Monsters Journal: To Diversify or Focus? That is the question.
--

Steem Monsters is not an inexpensive game to play. Without a doubt, it costs a pretty penny to do so. Leveling up cards is not cheap, and neither is collecting them. So with that said, the question begging to be answered is should I diversify into many splinters or focus on one? Here are some thoughts.

First and foremost, it is important to remember that cards from two splinters (ex. Fire, Death, etc.) can not be used together. Dragons are an exception. This intentional hindrance means that when forming teams, the player is forced to neglect almost 80% of his or her other cards in order to put together a comprehensive team. Should one try to level up a particular splinter & focus on collecting only cards from that splinter?

It seems to depend. I would argue that to be competitive, one needs to have at least two splinters with which they've focused on collecting. The reason for this is due to the gameplay format rotation that often excludes particular splinters from playing at a given time. This is no problem until that one splinter you were focusing on happened to be excluded coercing you into an instant surrender.

While sometimes two or more splinters can be excluded, usually having at least 2 splinters allows one of them to be played at a given time. Additionally, using two splinters allows for some versatility when choosing teams after seeing what your opponent tends to play. Some splinters simply work better against others.

On the other hand, if one is simply looking to earn daily packs and not to be competitive, having a well rounded, but low level collection is ideal. This prevents one from leveling up too high so that they can't win, but also to participate in all of the daily challenges.

All very good points. I chose to deal with the rotation problem by ignoring one splinter entirely.
