How to Photoshop your work with the Extrude Tool

This is another unusual post from me where I throw out the "no photoshop" mantra and embrace image manipulation like a homecoming friend.  I spend ages shooting everything in one photographic expsoure but for this post, the gloves are off and Photoshop is in full swing!

I like the effect created using the Extrude Filter in Photoshop.  It's simple enough to use and experiment with but I like the idea that close up the image looks almost unrecognisable and abstract but viewed farther away the original image becomes more obvious.  

***Desne waves an extruded light blade***

For this shot, I duplicated the layer and applied the Extrude Filter to one of the two layers. I then changed the Blend Mode to Lighten and this popped up on screen.  I'm blown away by this effect!  Using two layers and the Lighten Blend mode means that some of the original image can be edited through the extrude pattern giving the result a little more context.

***Extruding Shazza***

In the Extrude Tool settings, it's possible to change the values of the size, length and other attributes.  It's good to experiment:

***Before & After***

This is a shot in the dark with the lovely Desne, before and after.  In this image I didn't use the blend mode, just applied the Extrude filter to a single layer:

***Glittery Sal***

Looking somewhat like an explosion in a paint factory, this is Salski posing in a less than glamorous derelict factory. The effect works best with vanishing point perspective images:

***Neena art nude***

I haven't shot art nude very often but this image of Neena seems to work well with the Extrude Tool and the Lighten Blend mode.

***MC Crystalise***

You may be forgiven for thinking I only shoot female models.  That would be mostly true but I have been known to shoot male models albeit MC Crystalise here isn't technically a model but he sure knew the moves!

***Electric Harley Quinn***

The original image was a lightpainting shot where I filled in a model's silhouette with lightpainting.  For the extrude settings I used a triangular pattern rather than a block which seems to have worked well.
