We all aspire to be something or other.  I've always aspired to be a landscape photographer but I simply cannot deal with the early mornings of getting up at silly o'clock to go catch a sunrise somewhere.  Not me at all!  So the only solution open to me is to shoot in the dark late in the evening!

And the other problem which exists for me is my propensity to add motion or lightpainting to the image.  I can't help myself!  That's the way I roll!

***North Leverton Windmill & West Burton Power Station***

This evening I had the intention to go shoot North Leverton Windmill under a moonlit sky with the hint of mist which was appearing.  On the way there I spotted this point of view where I hadn't seen the windmill lit up like this.

I slammed on the brakes and desperately looked for a layby.  I drove up and down the road looking for somewhere to park and eventually edged close to a ditch and stuck on the hazard warning lights.  I got out of the car with the tripod and set up with the longest focal length lens I had in my bag which was an 85mm.  Too short but the compression of the longer focal length seems to have worked.

I like the juxtaposition of old and new power generation.  With these "new" coal powered stations gradually being replaced, it looks the old windmill will outlast the new!

***The Technicolour Needle***

Now normally as a lightpainter I shoot everything in one photographic exposure.  For this shot I conducted a little expermient where I shot using a laptop and made a series of images where I added a little more colour or light to layers in Photoshop.  Every time I clicked the shutter I would add the RAW file to the image to build up the layers.

I will not go to "lightpainter's heaven" creating this abomination but it does look good to me!

***Stanage Edge***

Up in the Peak District is this naturally formed geological ridge which used to be mined for the gritstone used to make grinding wheels for milling purposes.  There are still the remains of unused millstones everwhere including this group stacked against each other.

***East Buxton Lime Kiln***

I simply can't myself and added some "in your face" lighting to these huge buttresses on what was once a lime kiln next to a railway line.  This is the outside of my favourite lightpainting haunt, inside this structure is a modestly sized cave perfect to lightpaint in when the weather is terrible.

***Surprise View***

Surprise View is a sharp corner on a road in the Peak District and this is a dangerous photo to take; I had to stand on a 5 foot square rock with a 30 foot drop behind me; falling down wouldn't have ended well...

***Little John***

I live on the edge of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire famous for the legend of Robin Hood.  It is also a place I haven't shot much and I've been trying to put that right!  This is a "looky uppy" shot with a fisheye lens where I've asked a friend to pose for the sense of scale.  To create seperation of the figure I used a small smoke pellet wafted behind the model.

***One windy night in Sherwood Forest***

The general idea with landscape photography is to have everything perfectly in focus and not moving.  No such luck on this evening as the wind was howling a gale!  Undeterred I decided to make it part of the composition and add a fellow lightpainter in to the mix.

The trees look a whole lot more scary when blowing around in the wind!

***Improvisation and a Tin Mine***

Shooting a tin mine by itself isn't that spectacular, especially under a dull as dishwater sky in the dark.  So I set about lightpainting it with the tools I had in my car at the time.  It's not my best ever work but everything was stacked against me.  I had emptied my car for a business trip of all the usual LP gear and had to make do with a gelled torch and a green fluorescent tube.  And sod's law it started raining shortly after I shot this!  I will not be back anytime soon to reshoot as it is 325 miles away!
