Within the last few days to a week of me posting on steemit, I’ve been seeing a rise in the number of comment bots on my posts. I’m not sure whether this is just because there has been a rise of them recently or because I have been posting earlier in the day recently. In fact I think the latter is more likely to be the case since I posted my last post quite a bit later and have had no comment bots as of writing this post.

# What is a steemit comment bot?

Steemit comment bots are macros that automatically copy and paste a comment onto your blog post in the hope that they will get some upvotes on their comments. They will usually tag your steemit username in the comment to make it look unique and it is a real person commenting but this is not hard to do with a macro. These comments will be very generic and have nothing to do with your post, just a simple copy and paste. As you can see from one of the posts above, these posts are not appreciated by many people on steemit since one of the commenters has a reputation of 11. Each new account starts with a reputation of 25 so this account has been downvoted a lot to get to 11.

# What’s the problem with steemit comment bots?

In steemit’s terms of service it says that the use of bots is allowed, so what is the problem? Most people take the use of bots to mean upvoting, which is where sites like steemvoter come in handy. I understand that everybody wants to get as much steem as easily as possible but usually when people have spent time creating a post they want to see upvotes and comments that are related to what they have produced. Steemit comment bots do neither of these which is what leads to them getting flagged. Speaking for myself mostly, I prefer to see a comment that someone has made formulating an opinion on the content that I have made, giving me the chance to reply to them and have a discussion.

Steemit is a strong community and the fact that if the community decides that something is unacceptable or unwanted it can be removed through flagging. This acts as a deterrent and in the near future might attribute to us seeing less steemit comment bots on our posts.
